4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours slightly translucent amber with thin fine head. Aroma of a sweet boozy, dusky, slightly hoppy. Lots of lacing. Medium Mouthfeel. Taste is a sweet booze, light bourbon. Then bitter light hops. Real nice balance with lots of flavor but not overpowering. Awesome
Had on-tap at Boat Works in St. Clair Shores for $6.50 a pint or something like that. 574deadzone (1419) - North Central, Indiana, USA - FEB 16, 2014
What is there to say about this beer... well, I was intrigued because I haven’t had many barreled IPAs, so that’s the main reason I went with this, even though it seemed to get fairly average scores for a beer that’s been in a bourbon barrel. The highlight of this beer? The appearance. The head on it with the lacing is borderline ridiculous. The worst part about Pig Pen is the mouthfeel... it seems too thin for the style, the ABV, and the fact that it was in a barrel. The smell and taste are pretty good, moreso as it warms up. The bourbon barrel character is undeniable, as there is a lot of that bourbony, vanilla, oaky sort of thing on the nose and in the taste. The smell and taste are almost exactly the same. For me, it seems like the barrel takes most of the flavor in this beer. That’s not a bad thing, but Pig Pen lacks a certain depth of flavor I’d like. Barrelbarrelbarrel without a thick mouthfeel or robust flavor... it needs more.
A respectable beer, but it won’t turn you on to barreled beers if you still aren’t into them.
Sampler on draft. Pours a hazy golden with a thinner khaki head, leaving a wall of lace. Nose involves citrus, oak, bourbon, and butter. Quite sweet, quite bitter, lightly tart. Medium to full bodied, oily, softly carbed, round, with a long soapy resiny bitter finish. Decent brew, though muddled with competing elements for me. alliance100 (1173) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - OCT 24, 2013

Sampled at GABF 2013. Pours an orange with some thin, eggshell head. Musty nose, pine, dried herbs, wood, earthy mushroom. Flavor is malty, brown sugar, leafy, root veg, orange, pine. Zesty finish. Odd. tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - OCT 18, 2013
UPDATED: APR 23, 2014 Growler: Somewhat cloudy pure copper & deep amber, not much of a head, just a thin, janky collar. Aroma is some sweet dark fruits, plums, lots of sweet citrus & tropical notes of mango, papaya, and orange. Melon? High floral & flowery presence. Mild oak & vanilla, not much bourbon. Taste has more bourbon presence, still pretty mild. Oak, pineapple, papaya, tangerine, & other sweet fruits. Very timid bitterness. Mild ashy & floral hop flavor in the finish. Seems to get more bitter with time, back of the tongue. Not bad for a style I’m not incredibly fond of.

On tap at GABF 2013, intense pine hops aroma, some drying brett, don’t really get the bourbon. TylerGreenDC (1093) - - OCT 12, 2013
At GABF. Wow. Big hops plus bourbon aroma. Both flavors come thru with balance. World class. bpar73 (1186) - Bellaire, Michigan, USA - OCT 3, 2013
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a yellow- gold with a white head. Lots of hops in the aroma and taste with boozy bourbon overtones. Nicely bitter finish.
