India Spruce is an Imperial Pilsner, fermented with local, hand-picked blue spruce tips. The spruce presence, rooted in historical brewing practices, is enormous and gives the beer a refreshing gin quality. This beer is impressively light bodied, considering the immense spruce flavors and the prodigious additions of hops.

Yellow color. Moderate head. The spruce works well enough with the aroma but becomes a total train wreck in the taste. Maybe it’s like having someone with no palate for sours rating a a lambic but this beer just did not go down well.

Very slightly hazy golden coloured body with a thin, half centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of spruce, pine, alcohol, light malt and a bit of mellow sweetness from earth. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong rich spruce and pine flavour with a lot of bitterness and funk with a little sweetness from sap or syrup and a kick of alcohol, earth and more pungent spruce. Aftertaste shows a lot more spruce, bitterness, alcohol, pungency, pine and earthy flavours with the lager yeast and body showing through along with some mellow sweetness on the very end. Overall, a decent beer, but too much of the lager shows through as a nasty, funky beer and too much spruce is in here for me without any roasted malt, which is nice to have it different, but it just doesn’t work out too well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 24-July-2015 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on my youngest daughter’s second birthday on 02-January-2017.

Bottle. Pours mostly clear gold. Aroma is spruce tips, toasted malt, pilsner malt, and some citrus. Flavor is sharp spruce notes, heavy piney bitterness, and some grapefruit notes, and an astringent finish. Light/medium body.

Pours bright yellow gold with a bubbly off white head. Tastes like corn, lavender soap, and strong spruce. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like lavender soap and spruce tips.

Notes from summer. Pours golden. Aroma and taste are large pine and some malts.

bottle - Pours slightly hazy light gold with a one finger white head. The aroma is predominantly spruce with maybe some pale or bready malt underneath. The flavor is all about the spruce, like chewing on an evergreen, not that that’s something I’ve ever done but if I had I’d imagine it would taste kind of like this beer. That’s not as bad as it sounds, but it’s hard to decide how much I like it. It’s different anyway. There’s some hops bitterness in there too, but the finish is spruce laden too.

Smells a little solvent-like, decent carbonation, nice mouth-feel - the spruce is VERY present, though not super pleasant. I would say interesting as a novelty, not a set of flavors I would wish to revisit.

Pours thick white and cloudy with a white head. Aroma and flavor brings nice spruce and evergreen flavors blended with hops and malts so well on the palate. There is a nice balanced sweetness that makes it easy drinking. On tap the spruce flavors were much stronger but still enjoyed!

No, sorry...can’t do it. I LOVE Short’s but this style no matter who brews it is repulsive. Imagine Christmas tree reservoir water and hops....yuck.

Bottle brought back from Michigan. Clear yellow to gold in color with a thin white head. Aroma of malt, pine and noble hop. Malty flavor with bitter pine before a crisp finish.

12oz bottle thanks to Santa, pours mostly semi hazy yellow/golden with a large white head. Spruce and citrus aroma, light grassy hops and some yeast. Spruce is very prominent but not overwhelming balanced well with resinous citrus hops, finishing with yeast and dry cracker malt. I don’t know how much of a Pilsner I would consider this but it’s very tasty and well done.
