Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. nose is sharp spices, coffee and banana. Taste is bittersweet with a small amount of salt in the back. Sharp and fizzy with a light body however the taste lingers for a long time after the sip. This was better than expected. What a treat. paintedmaple (671) - People’s Republic of Bloomington, Indiana, USA - JAN 28, 2012
More like a black alchemical potion than a beer and what a potion. Medicinal anise with other herbal notes. Something to drink while you’re working on your philosopher’s stone... RamyG4 (324) - Seattle, Washington, USA - AUG 16, 2012
Bottle thanks to mibirder. Black witha small-medium light brown head. Aroma is bourbon, caramel, vanilla, coconut; classic bourbon aged beer aroma. Taste is more of the same, medium sweet, with a mild-medium roasted bitterness. Finish is dry with lingering bourbon. Soft-moderate carbonation, medium body. Good stuff. Medium sized, vast yet a bit lively, slowly changin beige tan foamy head on top of a very very deep dark ruby to almost black colored beer.
Aromas of mocha, chalk, roast, cacoa, milk chocolate, some hops, hint of coffee (roast), slight hint of charcoal, crushed pepper rounds and other spices. Lot like a milk stout
Flavour has lots of roast, chalk, cacoa, burn, bitters and grass. There is some hints of spices like pepper and bay leaf, chocolate, malts in a toast/roasty way.
Aftertaste chocolate, cocoa, (malty) roast, bitters, light dry and some chalk.
Low carbo, soft lightly blown foamy mouthfeel, medium to fuller body and a creamy texture.
Very stout a like, tasty beer, balanced and going towards a complex beer. Nice. ebone1988 (1925) - Dearborn, Michigan, USA - OCT 25, 2013
UPDATED: JUN 14, 2017 Aroma is nice, light roasted malt, roasted nuts maybe. Appearance is not quite black, more like dark brown. Taste is solid, like a good porter, roasted malt and a touch of something sweet. Can’t put my finger on that. Mouthfeel is perfect, super thick. Overall it is pretty great, good work Short’s.

Pours black with a tan head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate. Flavors are similar. GodOfThunder (1249) - Orlando, Florida, USA - JUN 12, 2010
Thanks to Northernbrews. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and strong roast. Flavor is more of that strong roast and cocoa. Almost reminds me more of a brown ale than a black beer. Very good and roasty. vyvvy (6476) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - JUL 11, 2010
Sampled at Schlafly’s 2010 Repeal of Prohibition Festival - Really nice Schwarzbier. Pours very dark with a tan soapy headd. The aroma has sweet licorice, chocolate, dark malt (no bitterness), vanilla and cream. Medium clean body with fairly light carbonation. The flavor starts with dry cocoa, very nice roasty malt with good bitterness and a bit of spice. The finish is spicy and bitter. Great beer. klingea1 (28) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - OCT 20, 2010
Bottle pours the darkest brown you can get before calling it black. Nice aroma of toasted malts. Toasty, nutty, lightly smokey flavor. A medium light body makes this a very drinkable beer. wnoble (1251) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - DEC 16, 2010
12oz bottle thanks to my friend in MI. Pours dark brown to black with a small, brown, fading head. Nose is roasted malts, fresh toasted breads, munich malts, chocolate, light caramel, coffee, and wood. Taste is breads, cereal, chocolate, nuts, toasted malts. Starts sweet then finishes bitter and slightly dry from the roast character but is very pleasant with some earthy hop flavor backing. Full bodied and smooth on the palate. no lace. no hop aroma. Good beer. I could easily mistake it for an American style porter.
