On tap at brewery. Good chocolate aroma. Black with a decent, light tan head that left great lace. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied. Overall a good flavor and appearance. koleminer20 (3840) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - AUG 24, 2013
Tap at HopCat in East Lansing. Pours a darker brown, tanish head that fades quickly with no head. The aroma is chocolatey with a hint of malt, not much more. The taste is light. Somewhat present with chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and some malty undertones. The mouth feel is very thin, and the lingering flavor doesn’t last long at all OldMrCrow (2446) - Seattle, Washington, USA - JUL 11, 2013

Opaque dark brown beer, little tan head. Light dry palate. Sourish start rapidly followed by powdery dark chocolate and a pinch of coffee. Dry finish. Strange but beguiling!
Draft. Chocolate malt and light banana aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Sweet dark chocolate and wheat malt aroma. Light bitter/ashy finish. Very nice - great use of wheat malt - wish there were more beers like this.

Light scent of milk chocolate and tootsie rolls that quickly becomes nonexistent. Thin head and light body. Chocolate upfront in the taste followed by intense malt, coffee and weirdness. Can't figure out whether I like the finish or not. It's odd. bpar73 (1177) - Bellaire, Michigan, USA - FEB 1, 2013
On tap at the pub. Pours a dark brown to black with a tan head that left some good lacing. aroma dark bitter sweet chocolate, caramel, coffee, roasted malts, yeast,. flavor same as aroma with a hint of smoke. Good beer BBB63 (6557) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - DEC 20, 2012
Bottle and served in a snifter: Pours a deep brown hue with a fading fizzy head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of walnuts, toast, moderate chocolate, some char and leathery vapours along with a dash of plum esters. The taste is mostly nutty and bready with some chocolate notes in reserve. A dash of ripened dark fruit and a touch of coffee. Not getting much hop character other than some basic bitterness. The mouth feel is moderately carbonated, a bit ashy and metallic. It is an okay brew, no real flaws but nothing all that exciting either. Had higher hopes for this one. bytemesis (8970) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - DEC 15, 2012
Bottle. Pours seep black with a medium beige head that dissipates with decent lacing. Aroma is chocolate, tobacco, wheat, coffee. Flavor is much the same, medium sweet with a bit of spiciness and a very light coffee bitter finish. Medium-full body and creamy. Quite nice actually. umich03jm (3513) - Flat Rock, Michigan, USA - DEC 14, 2012
UPDATED: JAN 31, 2014 Original rate Dec 2012. Pours a dark black color with almost no head. Aroma is interesting, burnt toast, chocolate, burnt wood, and roasted malt. Taste is heavy on the burnt wood and chocolate taste. Finish is long with a lingering burnt wood taste and a slight spiciness. Very thin body but very smooth too. Overall, I liked it but didn’t love it. Would like some more body to this. Re-rate 1/31/14 - Body is medium-thick now so they must’ve changed something. Taste seems about the same, chocolaty, roasty, and a little burnt toast. Pretty nice beer now that there’s some body to it.
