Completely black with medium head. Chocolate flavor was excellent, and wheat added a bit of tang. Very fresh sample!

Wow was I suprised when a friend brought back a growler of this from the brewpub. I thought "you went all the way to Short’s and a chocolate wheat beer is what you bring back?" Oh man, was I wrong...this was well worth the trip! Ground breaking wheat beer perfectly married to chocolate. I was blown away.

On tap at the Brickhouse BBQ Beer Spot Great Taste pre-party. Dark brown with ruby lowlights and a creamy brown slowly dissipating head. Aroma of chocolate, wheat, fruit and roasted malt. Taste is malty with chocolate, wafer, lactose, mild fruit and cherry. Mild astringency and sourness but okay overall.

On tap at Brickhouse BBQ. Poured deep brown with not much head on it. The aroma was on the sweet side, with a lot of roast too.. blended chocolate and black patent maltage for the most part.. tangy wheat popped around the nose.. just OK. The flavor found heavy, astringent black patent roast above all else.. cocoa and darker chocolate were in there too.. sharp roast and wheaty tartness prickled the sides of the tongue.. finished sharp with lots of woody and wheaty notes plus chocolate. Medium-bodied, dry, and very grainy on the palate.. too astringent.. not one I really want to try again.

Competition bomber bottle poured to sampler glasses at a local beer tasting party. The color was very dark brown, with light tan head foam, and good cling to the curtainy lacing. So far, so good? The nose was not roasty as I would have expected, but now, a sweet, grape juice (Welch’s) scent. The flavor was astringent, tart, and dry. Well past it! Surprised and disappointed that it didn’t cellar better.

On tap at Churchkey. Served in a snifter. Pours a dark brown color with a thin off-white head. Slight lacing and a thin collar throughout. The nose brings some light chocolate and a slight amount of roasted malt. Nothing too complex, but it’s pretty good. The flavor is along the same lines. There is a bit of intermingling of chocolate flavors, with both milk and dark chocolate coming through. Along with that is some slight roast, which comes through in a slight bitterness in the finish. Draft. Dark brown body, small beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, bittersweet chocolate, some roast. Taste is moderately sweet, milk chocolate, some roast, light earthy. Light-medium body.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. Poured a dark, almost black color, very small tan head. Aroma was chocolate malts, roasted notes. Flavor had bitter chocolate notes, wheat. Pretty enjoyable.

On tap at North Peak. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, kind of grainy, of wheat. Taste of burnt toasted malt, wheat, and dark chocolate. Lingering burnt bitter chocolate wheat. Different and tasty.
