COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Liberator was made as a 30th birthday gift to Joe Short. As a double IPA, this beast employs a sizable malt bill, but it is the crazy amount of hops added to the boil every 4 minutes, for 120 minutes, that really make this beer special. Fruity, floral, and piney hop flavors penetrate throughout the caramelized malt profile. Liberator is a well-balanced, full bodied brew that has a bitter finish due to the post fermentation addition of lemon and orange zest.

The original batch brewed on the Bellaire system had 42lbs of hops in it, compared to Huma, which has around 20lbs of hops per batch. Today’s Elk Rapids batches have up to 138lbs of hops. The name, Liberator, came from Joe’s name for the Short’s employees who carry out our company’s mission statement as “Beer Liberators”, freeing the masses from their misconceptions surrounding beer.

12oz bottle, pour is a medium hazy orange. Taste is piney hops and citrus, aftertaste that really wallops the palate with bitterness.

Slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright pungent hops with pineapple, resin, pine, grapefruit and citrus all noticeable - all with some syrupy sweet smells, a good deal of alcohol and some malt that seems to provide a nice balance. Medium-bodied; Biting hops up front with citrus, grapefruit, alcohol, pine and a fresh pineapple flavour make for a nice bitterness, while the smooth and layered malt provide good balance. Aftertaste has a bit of an alcohol burn at first, but the citrus and tropical fruits mellow that out and show a smooth finish with not only a large hop bitterness, but a fruity and sweet note as well. Overall, a nice Imperial IPA with a good profile and smoothish drinking, while still having a good deal of alcohol and a pungent hop and citrus flavour. Good to sample and well worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2016 for US$2,79 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 15-January-2017.

12oz bottle- pours a deep golden color. Pretty good hops scent but doesn’t promise too much. Wow, lots of nicely balanced hops. No medicinal flavor. Doesn’t quite feel like an 8% and has none of the lemon or orange zest.

Decent ipa. Deep resinous notes of pine followed by bitter citrus. The palate on this one is extremely bitter, a tongue torcher.

Draft. Hazy, dark gold. Malty, piney aroma. Malty, bitter, bitter palate. Not a citrusy, hoppy IPA. Not complex, just simple well-done bitterness.

Aroma is malty, orange peel, lemon, pine, some kind of spice. Appearance is rust orange, light light beige head. Taste is spice, a weird savory spice that is immediately off putting, some pine, bitterness, tons of malt, not good. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, crisp carbonation, that horrible saltiness is lingering. Overall, this is completely missing the mark.

Pour on tap at Crunchy’s, slightly hazy golden orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of nice orange, grapefruit, some slight pine, grass into some biscuit. Taste was a mix of sweet orange, grapefruit, some slight pine, grass, touch of bread, finishing very bitter.

Bottle: Copper colored body with a very mild cloudiness. Gray-tinted head fades quick & leaves only small bits of lacing behind. Very floral nose, abundant grapefruit & hop oil with white pepper in the background. Taste is very bitter. Grapefruit pith, bitter citrus rind, intense floral earthiness, rose petals, oily resins, & a heavy pine needled sting that lingers. Huge hemp oily, perfumey, & resinous finish. Lots of white pepper, bitter grapefruit, & botanicals, too. Sharp mouth feel, medium bodied. Good beer, maybe a bit much at times, but still quite enjoyable.

12oz bottle from gimmethefunk, thanks Pat. Poured a good looking honey brown body with an average sized frothy off white head. Aroma of pineapple, guava, mango, grains, dough, bread, and hop cones. Medium body, syrupy mouthfeel, average to softer carbonation and a lingering aftertaste with a slight hint of heat. Flavor of yellow grapefruit, citrus rind, pineapple, hop cones, dry grass, bread crutsts, grains and lemon zest. Definitely digging this one.
