Charlie Papazian and Fred Eckhart are the men who launched a thousand breweries. Their writing on the art of homebrewing and steadfast promotion of beer culture helped propel the craft brewing movement. Charlie and Fred agreed to work with us on this special ale in honor of our 30th anniversary. This Imperial Helles Bock is a testament to the ever-evolving brewer’s art. Bold yet balanced with distinct toasted malt character, moderate sweetness and clean and floral hops.

an interesting beer to say the least. advertised at the local sierra tap house as an imperial helles bock. looks like a bock. aroma is huge...sweet, hoppy, malty, complex. love it. body is full...maybe even a little thick by the end. flavor is complex too, but maybe a touch too heavy. this is definitely a unique, fairly aggressive for the style brew, somewhat sweet...worth a shot."

From the corked, caged bottle cellared for three years and opened on May 1, 2014 to celebrate Spring and my 1,900th rating. The pour is copper-amber leading up to a modest off-white head that fades some but leaves plenty of lacing in its wake. How malty is that? Lots of caramel malts and butterscotch on the nose. A touch of meaty fruit maybe? Not typical for the style but it is probably the best description I can think of. In some ways it reminds me more of a Wee Heavy than a Helles Bock. Sweet. Little to no hop aroma. Medium to full body and smooth. Like the nose there is a full and sweet malty character in the taste. Not bitter or dry but truly malted. I never tried it fresh so I can’t make a good comparison but I enjoyed it aged.

Backlog. The malt aromas are dominating, caramel, butterscotch, dark bread and a hint of spices.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber with a two finger off-white head. Aroma of caramel, bread, fruit and floral hops. Flavor of sweet malts, caramel, bread, floral a bit of honey and had a touch of earthiness with a lightly bitter finish.

Not quite as complex as thought. Like others that have remarked that it could be that it is does not stand up to aging and should be had fresh. Tastes of caramel and slight roasts with a spicyness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I’ve had this a few times, time to review. Golden with a persistent sheet of white foam and a brilliant clarity. Smells malty, sweet and light bread, tea, cola, candied pecans, touch of german yeast character, a touch of freshly cut alfalfa and a hint of rose. Flavor is floral: malts, slight oxidation, a bit of bread and caramel. There is a ton of flower character in here for me with rose hips, a little bit of hibiscus and orange peel likeness in here. I like the complexity of the flavor, delicate as it is. Medium bodied with limited carb and an almost dry finish. Nice beer, glad how this one has evolved.
