Jack McAuliffe was the first American "micro" brewer. His tiny New Albion Brewery in Sonoma, California inspired countless dreamers to start small-scale breweries of their own. Jack agreed to guest brew this very special ale with us in honor of our 30th anniversary. This Black Barleywine Ale is a nod to the legendary ales New Albion served at their legendary summer solstice parties. Rich with bittersweet and roasted malt flavors, balanced with whole-cone American hops, this robust ale should age gracefully for years.

Very dark brown opaque beer, good creamy tan head. Light licorice nose. Dry palate. Licorice dark malt, a little fruit. Alcohol spice and a bitter dry finish. Found this hard to get down, disappointing.

Travlr (26430) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - NOV 7, 2010
Draft at Taphouse in Ghent. Deep yellowish brown color, small off white head. Aroma of caramel, taste of caramel syrup with a tiny bit of hops toward the end. Pretty straightforward.

Papsoe (25054) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - DEC 19, 2010
Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of RCL. Dark brown with a reddish hue and a creamy and lacing off-white head. Intensely dusty nose, burned caramel and nuts. Quite full-bodied, again nuts, burned caramel and intense aroma hops. The sweet caramel lasts all through the finish merging with the alcohol. 141210

Tap at Blind Tiger, NYC. Pours deep, black-brown with a sturdy, tan head. Roasted, dark malts and earthy hops in the aroma. Flavor is sweet and at first quite roasty. With time and warmth, some dark fruits such as grape and plum come through. Full bodied with average carbonation. Finishes fruity sweet with roasty dryness. Excellent beer, very dynamic, and unlike any other I’ve had.
