Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

(Sierra Nevada Bigfoot - Barrel Aged) Bottle 650 ml from Summer Secret Santa, many thanks! Corked and caged, vintage 2015. Served into a snifter, ABV 11.9% Deep red coloured body, clear, with almost a full finger of thick, dark beige head on top, with good retention. Aroma has malts, caramel, red fruits, alcohol, vanilla, bourbon. Taste is sweet, lots of alcohol present, red fruits, caramel, vanilla, malts, dates, bourbon. Medium body, carbonation on the high side, sticky palate. Very good.

I have been saving this beer for a couples of years now. Dark amber pour similar to the non barrel aged version. Whiskey smell with some oak and pine dominate the aroma. Smooth mouth feel. Nice woody finish with a decent hop balance. This beer was worth the wait. Yummy!!!

Draft @ The Bistro’s Barrel Aged Beer Fest. Pours a deep garnet color with a white wisp on top. Sweet and hoppy aroma with an obvious woody and bourbon note. Sweet/ bitter flavor with more bourbon and some vanilla. Dusty finish. Tastes like it may have a slight oxidation but it doesn’t detract in the least from this beer.

snifter @ hard liver - one of the ones i went right after on the first day; light amber with slight cream head; subtle bourbon aromas add a more rich dimension to the flavors over the regular edition; caramel, some fruit and nice amount of sweetness; texture is a little thin and overall just a delight

Brown in color with an off-white head. A bourbony barleywine (of course) in the start and finish in both aroma and taste; vanilla, oak, caramel and coconut. Fantastic!

On tap at Sierra Nevada. Aroma is boozy. Flavor is like bigfoot. I do detect that it is barrel aged. Oaky slightly vanilla. Finishes really dry. Good beer.

On tap at the SN taproom. Mahogany color with tan head. Aroma is strong vanilla character and bourbon. Flavor is dark fruits with bourbon and vanilla. Palate is medium bodied with a slightly syrupy mouthfeel and a long dry finish. Overall a nice barley wine with some good barrel aged notes.

750 c&c from the Arden BevMo in Sacramento, CA. 2013 Expedition. Pours a very dark, ruddy copper with a decent creamy/fizzy beige head. Aroma that seems to have alcohol along with brown sugar. Full bodied. There is a non-burning alcohol flavor - could be residual whiskey flavor messing with me. Burnt coconut and dark fruit seem to be appropriate. It’s not dry, but it’s not sticky. The vanilla/wood aspects are firm. Brown sugar is solid. The wood provides a certain astringency. I’m really curious about the barrel. SN isn’t particular about barrels - most are bourbon, but they do use Tennesse Whiskey and rye barrels. For me this isn’t heavy bourbon. Or even light. It is good. It is bitter. Nice break from BA impy stouts!

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2013 Dark cherry-skin pour with glimpses of burnt tangerine, copper, and plum. Tons of charred white oak, cedar, and maple. Loads of vanilla, whisky, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, fig, toffee, and alcohol. Still a bit hot because it’s young...this one should mellow nicely with age. Sweet but not cloying...honey is prominent in the finish. Sticky but not in a bad way. Much better with the added complexity of the barrel.
