COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhals aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as its nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Such a massive, delicious stout. Pours an infinite black with a healthy tan head, and the aroma practically shoves a Hershey bar up your nose. Starts surprisingly bitter, yet quickly grows a deep, smooth mocha core tinged with anise and smoke, then develops a dark choco-cherry undertone dripping with bourbon heat. Gains an oaken vanilla dryness on the finish, and the fade is bitter chocolate bliss. Damn fine beer.

Bottleshare: pours black with a beige head. Aroma is whikskey, chocolate and fresh coffee. Taste is woody and vanilla and loads of coffee and chocolate. Very smooth and creamy body. Very nice.

Barrel aged Narwhal 12.7% 1300¥ for 300ml at Bakujun - pricey for sure but hey it's nice to see it in Jaoan at all.

Inky black with a huge tan head of foam. The bouquet is whiskey, oat and umami. Full bodied and velvety smooth. This has a huge barrel character, very oaky, whiskey and chocolate. It paired deliciously with Belgian chocolates. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This was at the Ingomar Club in Eureka, CA. Pours into a Chmay glass dark black with a big tan head. Nose is bourbon, wood and chocolate. Full body. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is really rich with a lot of chocolate and bourbon, and some dark fruit. There is also vanilla and a touch of coconut. Finishes with a lot of bourbon and wood. Really delicious. Great beer.

Vintage 2015: Aroma is delish. Heavy roasted malts and thick chocolate notes. Slight booze in the smell. Taste is massive and almost "hot". Roasted flavors with licorice, raisins, vanilla fudge and a fair share of bourbon. Dark fruit sweetness in the end with quite a lot of alcohol pushing through. Wow. It carried more alcohol flavor than I expected, and thats not in its favor - other than that its a real badass.

Bottle from McHughs. 2015 edition. Pours oil black with wispy tan head. Aroma is lots of oak, honey, molasses, brown sugar, wood, chocolate, lactose, coffee with a hint of leather. Flavour is a smooth milk chocolate sweet with a dry wood finish. Very dry tannic end. Very enjoyable treat.

Sample during the "Bobs Private Bottle Share" on 11/21/2016. Opaque black color with a medium thick khaki head that diminishes steadily to a film. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon and coffee. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, roast malt and coffee. The finish is oaky and roasty with a bourbon and malt aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Pours pitch black with a tan head. Nose is full of bourbon and chocolate with massive boozy notes. Taste is upfront bourbon and oak notes melding into a chocolate finish with a bit of booze warmth. Hides abv well and is a nice balanced drop.

Bottle. It poured a black color with a tan head. The aroma was of bourbon, chocolate and a hint of coffee. The taste was similar to the aroma with more bourbon, chocolate, coffee, marshmallow and oak. Wow, really tasty.
