COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Bottle shared during the Cad’s 10th anniversary bash - Clerkenwell, London. Picked up in a trade! Pours oily black with a creamy tan head. The nose holds good charred malts, dark chocolate, raisins. Medium to big sweet flavor with some oily chocolate, light vanilla, subtle earthy bitterness, some figs, dates. Full bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Lightly warming to finish, with rich chocolate character, some oily chocolate, more vanilla, subtle dark fruits. Good depth, great balance. Sierra Nevada showing how it’s done.

Tasting at Matt’s, corked
Black color with small head. Solid Imperial Stout, more roasty than chocolatey, with nice medium sweetness, but also some unwanted liquorice; only light barrel presence.
Nice.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out toasted coconut and vanilla upfront, followed by chocolate and medium bourbon. Flavour is very complex, with notes of bourbon barrels, vanilla and chocolate. Wonderfully cohesive -- the bourbon barrels are used very well, transforming the base beer from great to excellent. Lots more dimensions to this. Excellent.

Bottle at Toms 10 yr anniversary. Black beer lasting tan head. Toast aroma. Hot in mouth. Some soy sauce some roast. Just not for me.

Oakes (19409) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 17, 2016
Very dark brown with a brown head.sticky malts, bourbon fairly prominent. Toffeeish brown sugars. Rich dark chocolate with lots of vanillins to add to the rich sugary sweetness. Might be veering towards cloying for me. Ok for the type but the vanillin comes on too strong for me, with nothing to balance it.
