750 ml corked and caged bottle. "2013 Expedition" is what it says on the label. Pours cloudy brown with orange highlights and a long-sustaining beige head. Aroma consists of toasted coconut, caramel, wet river rock, candied dark fruit. Taste starts out sweet, turns a little tangy and bitter before a lingering savory bitterness finishes it off. Pours a medium-dark copper color with a thin tan head. Smells like toffee and vanilla. taste is sweet and creamy with just a hint of hoppy bitterness to pull it back from being cloying. Mouthfeel is sticky and thick, but I don’t feel like I’m gonna choke on it or anything. This beer. This fucking beer right here. Good stuff. Very good. Bought about a year ago in Chicago from West Lake Liquors. While opening, the cork had a nice pop propelling about 6 feet. The aroma was rich caramel vanilla brown sugar and whiskey. The taste followed suit along with a relatively strong alcohol presence. This is a sipper. Palate was good with just the right amount of carbonation. Overall a damn good Barleywine. Dark copper, thick lasting head, and nice lace.
Aroma is brown sugar, toffee, whiskey, hops are there, but muted.
Flavor is burnt sugar, whiskey, vanilla, spicy hops, and oak.
Barrel aging definitely toned down the hops, and added a subtle sweetness from the whiskey.
Whiskey and oak tannin build as it warms. Definitely a sipper, as it changes in the glass. This would pair well with A Fuente Hemingway, Brickhouse, or Montecristo white label cigars. Maybe even Rocky Patel Edge corojo.
Everything about the barrel-aged variety of Bigfoot is, in fact, Big. The body is a gloriously dark shade of brown with a huge head (incredible lacing, too, by the way). Aroma of bourbon, oak, dark fruit, and rich malt. Flavor is complex. Toffee, plum, prune, raisin, whiskey, rose hip. Bigfoot likes to be warm before it unveils its vanilla and toasted marshmallow flavors. If you’re going to take on this beast, be advised: words like full-bodied and warm don’t adequately describe this beer. I could only do this beer in sips. With the high ABV, it sure sings one hell of a lullaby. I slept like the dead after this beer. This is a brew for special occasions and small quantities. Deep copper pour, attractive long lasting off white silky and thin head. Dominant aroma are of oak, whiskey with hops playing in the background. Interesting flavor, does not remind me much of the regular bigfoot. I do get brown sugar and raisin flavors. Hops seem more subdued than the non barrel aged variant. A well crafted brew on the whole. Bottle from Craft Beer Cellar. Poured into a Snifter, poured a deep amber-brown, with a 1cm beige head that lasted a good long while. This is only the 3rd or 4th Barleywine I’ve had, so comparisons are hard. Hops and rich, sweet malts dominate the flavour profile, with brown sugar, dark dried fruit and spice showing up. Lots of alcohol warmth. Oak is there, but not as strong as I expected. A good strong beer to enjoy now that the weather’s turning colder - certainly not a summer sipper. At SWBF 2016. Pours caramel with a low white head. Aromas of caramel, bourbon, oak, butterscotch, figs, dates, raisins, plums. Holy fuck that aroma! Taste is loads of caramel and candied fruit with prominent toasted oak notes. Mouthfeel is smooth and a bit oily with moderate carbonation. Just wow.
