This imperial red ale takes the intense hop profile found in traditional double ipa and turns up the malt. It has big aromatic hop notes of grapefruit, peach, and melon--balanced by a smooth and surprisingly robust malt body.

Pours a dark amber color with a khaki head. Nose is nicely sweet with plenty of caramel and toffee malts. Strong hop profile of grapefruit, tangerine, and pine. A bit of peach fruitiness, maybe some earth and floral notes as well. The flavor is slightly bitter with lots of pine and citrus peel hop notes. Tangerine and grapefruit give a nice citrus character. Solid maltiness with a good caramel sweetness as a dominant flavor of the beer.

12-oz. Pours a slightly hazy and very dark rubied amber with a loose creamy tan head. Lots of bubbly lace. Big piney nose with lots of caramel underneath. Creamy medium body with moderate carb. Toast, caramel, and pine on the mid palate with a piney finish. Surprisingly simplistic for the ABV, especially given that judging by the appearance it looks like it has a hefty malt bill.

12oz bottle. Poured a clear, deeper amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of floral hops, toast, citrus, and some earth. Tastes of floral hops, caramel, citrus, and pine.

Bottle from the Beer Camp 12pk from Woodmans in the Falls. Pours reddish orange, very clear with some fine bubbles, with a off-tan foamy head. Terrific soapy lacing. Aroma has sweet wild berries, toffee, citrus fruity hops with earthy notes. Taste is of sweet and bitter fruits (oranges, lemons, berries), syrupy resin with caramel malt , some wood and some alcohol. Finishes with some length; bittersweet and alcoholly. Solid, nicely made Am Str!

Smooth and malty, but balanced. Hints of fruit and a tad of hops in the finish.

Bottle. Pretty dark brown to copper colored hue with a tall, fluffy beige head. Aroma is spicy hops, peach and citrus with caramel underneath. Taste is big citrus, tropical fruit and strong peach notes along with spicy hops, caramel and hints of toffee. Body is medium-full and rather chewy with a dense, prickly carbonation and a moderate lingering hop bitterness. Ends with more citrus notes, hints of pine, spicy hops, peach, strong caramel, sweet malt and toffee notes. Tasty!

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2012 Pours a somewhat clear very dark amber color, almost brown. Nice amount of head that lingers a while. Big caramel and toasted malt aroma with some grapefruit hops mixed in. Taste is lots of caramel and malt up front, strong bitterness in the middle, and the grapefruit hops come through in the finish and with a nice toasted malt taste. Finish is not that smooth but other than that I really like it. A really good Imperial Red.

Poured from bottle, pours a clear dark reddish brown with an off white head and some lacing, aroma is of light malt and a little bit of hops, flavor is really boring except for the kick of alcohol on the front end, so far this is the worst of the bunch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle. Pours bright copper and clear. Nice balanced malt/hop nose. Taste starts off with an alcohol kick, then a thick maltiness comes through. Finishes very bitter and astringent though, with huge alcohol presence all the way through. Seems to be the worst of all pieces put together. Barely decent.

bhensonb (15345) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 24, 2012
Bottle from the Folsom BevMo (mixed box). Pours medium dark ruddy copper with a decent creamy/bubbly beige head. Aromas of roast malt and earthy fruits? Seems earthy and fruity anyway. Full bodied. Flavor is earth with roast malt and some spiced fruit. Spicy enough to suggest rye. Pretty flavorful, but somehow seems to need a bit more intensity. Although malt sweet is present, the finish is dryish, and there’s a good dose of hop bitter - earthy hop? Something like grapefruit rind pops out after a long time.
