3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Good beer. Aroma is chocolates and roasted malts. Appearance is dark pitch black. The taste is chocolate, coffee, and sweet malt.
Bottle: Thick looking, dark brown & black body with a creamy tan head that forms on top; fine-bubbled & well retained. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dense fudge, alcohol, milled oats, & a touch of woodsy char. Flavor is dense; slightly bitter with tons of roast, some ash, char, & a really heavy, dark chocolate finish. More bitter than sweet, although there’s a touch of creaminess around mid-palate. Mild anise in the finish, too. Medium-heavy bodied, relatively creamy. Not bad. Stuu666 (14543) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - MAR 4, 2015
Bottle at Craig’s. Pours black, nose is chocolate, oatmeal, roast malts, taste is similar, smooth and creamy. phaleslu (10547) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - FEB 20, 2015
2012 bottle (12 oz.) from DrSilverworm - thanks again, Chris! Pours an opaque brown with a small tan head that settles into a ring and some bubbles. Notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, oats, faint soy, earth, tobacco, nuts, dark fruits, and fudge. Medium-bodied, with low to moderate carbonation and a rich, roasty, sweet mouthfeel that also hits a small umami trigger. Not bad, but has clearly flattened out a bit over the years. slowrunner77 (12581) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 25, 2014
"SN continues to impress. This inky brew is dominated by mocha aromas and flavor, with a nice roastiness, and a little dark fruit and hops coming out a little more as it warms. Super flavorful and smooth. No hint of 9% when cold, and only a hint when warmer. An absolutely delicious brew - maybe my favorite beer camp brew in either release, and I loved the India ink." bigguns22 (800) - Maryland, USA - AUG 15, 2014
Very dark beer almost black medium tan head that disapates quickly. Aroma is rich and sweet. Full flavor beer with coffee, roasted malts and chocolate flavors.

(12oz bottle, 2012 vintage) Pours an opaque black body with a spare tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, and chocolate. Flavor of chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, light ash, brown sugar, earthiness, and oatmeal. zach8270 (4021) - Henrietta, New York, USA - JUN 24, 2014
(bottle - 12 oz) Dark brown pour with a fluffy tan head. Rich roasted malt and coffee aroma with some dark chocolate and wine notes. Roasted malt flavor with a really smooth and bitter coffee finish. Oatmeal isn’t very apparent but I think it helped smooth out the body. Really good and held up well. Heathen (1500) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - JUN 19, 2014
THOUGHTS: Very nice. I think they’re starting to get as good with imperial stouts as they are with hoppy beers.
TECNICAL: Drank 2/24/2013. Bottle. Poured a very dark brown that was nearly opaque black in the glass with a small, tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma contained moderate cereal, chocolate, coffee and chocolate syrup; cherry; tar; alcohol; dark fruits; tobacco; and hints of leather. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and moderately bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and heavily bitter with a long duration. There was milk chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, chocolate cake, lots of coffee, oats, licorice, tobacco, soy sauce, and tar. The very full body was oily and creamy, but sticky on the lips with soft but tingly carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. fletchfighters (1553) - AUSTRALIA - MAR 15, 2014
Had in Cellar for a while and thought time to open this up
Jet black color, rocky light brown color head. Good retention to the head, and some decent ABV legs.
Nose has some lactose, rolled oats, roasted grain, and touches of vanilla. Thought it was root beer at first.
Odd taste that does not work really. Flashes of cardboard, rolled oats, roasted grain, coffee, some pine bitterness, and maple syrup. Waves of booze do come through in this. Really unbalanced.
A little too slick and oily really. Probably was too hoppy to start. Needs more oatmeal character. Not real good harrymel (1551) - Spokane, Washington, USA - DEC 7, 2013
2012, drunk in 2012
Dark brown on black with a persistent sheet of mocha foam. Smells of coffee and oats, but also a smell of chocolate and a hint of some poops I’ve taken - okay. Maybe also a hint of licorice. Flavor is mealy and oaty. Some nutty character and a decent amount of hop bitterness. Full bodied with hi carb and a dry, too dry finish. I’m not impressed, which is weird, as these beers usually d the trick for me (the Beer Camp beers that is).
