12 oz served in a Southern Tier tulip.
A - Pours a deep amber/red with a massive 3 finger head that looks like tan meringue. Very good retention with plenty of lacing left behind.
S - Toasted grain covered in caramel, big bread crust aroma, just loads of toasted malt, some earthy citrus underneath.
T - Heavily toasted malted barley, caramel, unknown fruit esters, aggressive grassy hops cover the entire tongue and a spicy bite, hints of pecan skins, grapefruit starts showing up just past mid palate. Finishes with hop bitterness and a raw grain and caramel character that really grabs your attention.
M - Medium tight carbonation, hefty side of medium body, feel is smooth and chunky at times.
A great take on the style. Very deep malt bill with supporting hops. Very raw but in robust and elegant way. I really liked this one.

Bottle: Deep copper with a slight red hue, very small amount of chill haze that eventually dissipates. Creamy beige cap. Aroma of pine sap, biscuit malt, toasted bread, yeast, mild resins, grapefruit rind, & sugary orange zest. Flavor starts more citrusy & leafy with a bit of herbal & ashy hops, the pine & resin grow towards the back-end. Malts are subtle at first but grow & last into the finish; very biscuit, full of toasted bread, light caramel, & even a small twinge of toffee. Pours rusty with a quilt of peanut foam. Nice tea, pine and bitter citrus notes over a scotch like nose. There is a certain herbal quality to this beer. The flavor is assertively bitter up front, again with tea like hops and some english malts. Then followed up with some pleasant creamy sweetness (which is fleeting) and then some lasting ESB character. I like. Medium on full bodied with prickly, moderately hi carb and an off-dry finish. Nice beer. Once annually would be nice.

Overall, a pretty solid Imperial Red with a really grapefruit rind finish, great malt balance.

Tulip at Ruckus Pizza. Good aroma. Sweet. Nutty caramel.citrus. clean reddish brown color good initial head. Faded quick. Spotty lace. Bittersweet flavor. Medium body creamy mouthfeel, bittersweet finish. Nice. Surprised it’s so low. Good beer

12oz pour at Dexters. Filtered brown-orange. Big, creamy off-white/beige head. Quite nice, very familiar territory for SN, somewhat like the Torpedo and Rye merged. Big chewy malt tones, but an even more massive resiny pine-citrus hop bill. Bold, reminiscent of big hoppy American Scotch Ales, a touch amber forward. a touch soapy and brutal at times, but still another winner for SN. arrogantb (1402) - Denver, Colorado, USA - NOV 22, 2012
12oz bottle from the recent mixed Beer Camp 12 pack. Red, clear, sticky head, Smells super malty. I always expect imperial reds to be super hoppy but this relied more on malts to produce a solid beer. Smells sort of like coffee, yum. Taste has the slightest hint of coffee followed by malts and a touch of hops. This might be the best beer in this mix pack. Solid.

12-oz. bottle into a pint glass at my house on Aug. 18, 2012 (picked it up in the 2012 Beer Camp 12-pack for $19.99 at La Mesa BevMo on Aug. 18, 2012). Poured a reddish mahogany with 2-3 fingers of chocolate, tan head. Good retention all around on the way down.
Smelled bitter, rye hops. Also some light citrus notes, maybe grapefruit. Caramel and toffee malts, and even some light chocolate.
Tasted bitter, rye hops. Iced tea. Caramel and toffee malts. Grapefruit, citrus hops. Earthy, grainy.
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

On tap at Dexters in Madison, pours a dark amberish orange with a nice white head and heavy lacing in the glass, the aroma is much sweeter than I was expecting, sweet malt and dark fruit in the flavor with a slight hop touch in the finish, kind of a weird one here, doesn’t really seem to come together all the way.
