Our Bigfoot Barleywine is a craft beer legend. Each winter, this beast of a beer appears and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting palates with its intense bittersweet flavors. This year—in honor of the 30th Anniversary of this style-bending brew— we’re releasing a very special version of this cult classic: Aged in oak whiskey casks for nearly two years, this barrel-aged Bigfoot is incredibly complex. The assault of resinous hops has mellowed, and the influence of the wood has shifted focus toward the malt—with rich burnt-sugar flavors and notes of vanilla, toasted coconut, and raisins. Grab this elusive beast while you can, because it won’t be around for long.

Draft at Slaters. Aroma of vanilla, toffee, caramel, cinnamon and booze. Soft flavor of creamy herbal caramel, riasin, toffee, buttery vanilla and some malt. Very sticky sweet beer.

Poured from big bottle. Smelling that bourbon barrel oak. Amber mahogany with lacing. Tasting oak, vanilla, big alcohol, caramel, roasted malt, dried fruit. Mellows nicely as it warms. A bit strong, but excellent.

on tap at the Mills River brewery; deep amber to red color; fantastic aroma - sweet malt with hops and bourbon - mostly bourbon, with hints of oak; intense bourbon flavor; oak and hop notes; the bourbon really overwhelms everything else - not that I have a problem with that

BOTTLE. Ruby/crimson in colour with off white head.. Smells of sweet toffee apple, malt biscuit & booze with some warmth.. Warm boozy caramel malt, goes to a sappy texture finishing with dried fruits & a hoppy kick. .Sourced Cape Cellars

Type: 24-oz. bottle
Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter glass
From: Costco in Goleta (Santa Barbara), Calif.
Price: $7.50 ($30 for a High Altitude variety 4-pack)
Purchased: May 29, 2016
Consumed: Aug. 5, 2016
Reviewed as: American Barleywine
Misc.: Packaged on March 29, 2016 at 10:12 a.m. PT; ABV is actually 11.6 pct.

This was the crown jewel out of the four I got from the high altitude four-pack for $30 at Costco, down from a previous price I saw for $40 at Barons. Would be extremely disappointed if this wasn’t the best of the four I tried. Gave the non-BA version a 4.30.

Poured a light brown, clear color with two fingers of frothy, khaki head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled bourbon, chocolate, oaky wood, tobacco, fig, vanilla, maple syrup, sugary caramel and toffee. (Smell - 4.25)

A bit hot on the tongue initially. Also got boozy bourbon, oaky wood, vanilla, earthy tobacco, fig, caramel, dry maple syrup, toasted toffee and unknown hops. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, woody, warming finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This was good, but not as good as I thought it would be. I prefer the base version more. NOTE: Digging it more two days later. Jumped it from a 4.00 to a 4.25. (Overall - 4.25)

Packaged on 3/29/16 - from Costco.

Not a ton of barrel characters, but the ABV is very well hidden for 11.6%.

Hints of vanilla, in there - but overall a good

UPDATED: AUG 1, 2016 Poured from a 750 ml 2015 vintage bottle. Aroma is malt forward with lots of caramel, toffee and burnt sugar. Some treacle with medium light oak notes. Some light vanilla. Moderate hop notes with a woodsy and pine resin character. Light alcohol spice. Pours a hazy brown, with some burnt amber hues and a medium sized, thick tan head that recedes to the edges and lingers. Light lacing and moderately long legs. Flavor is rather sweet with lots of caramel. Lighter toffee and burnt sugar with faint treacle. Medium high bitterness. Some moderate hop notes with pine resin, grapefruit and slots of wood. Light alcohol spice and hints of vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer but not an amazing one. I really think the hop character and bitterness detract from the beer. I guess I?m not a huge fan of old school American style barleywine. Though I do kind of like their aroma.

24oz bomber from 2016 drank in 2016. Filtered looking amber-brown body. Thin off-white head. Really solid barrel notes..they nail it in the description. Vanilla, coconut, raisin, bourbon, oak. Really adds some considerable complexity to Bigfoot. Really nails it. Solid.

Mark_Eck (1998) - - JUL 20, 2016
Bottle. Pours a dark amber color. Aroma and taste are dark fruits, whiskey, and caramel. Taste doesn’t live up to the aroma.

SirLimpsalot (4551) - SWEDEN - JUL 15, 2016
@ Basunen 16-7-13: Mycket komplex med fylliga toner av malt, tjära, socker, whisky, lakrits och torkat frukt. Lång fin eftersmak. Elegant.
