Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Bottle shared at home. Hazy orange colour, small white head. Nose is sweet, caramel, burnt sugar. Taste is medium bitterness. Lingering, intense bitter aftertaste. I’m kinda missing the barley winey sweet notes. Feels like a dipa with all this bitterness...

Draft at Growler Spot. Chestnut colored and full bodied. Boozy malt flavor and sweet finish. Very polished barleywine.

Vintage 2017. Aroma of sweet fruits, malt & raisins. Amber red with large lightly brown head. Very bitter & light sweet taste. Full bodied, creamy texture & soft carbonation. Guess it’s still immature.

Brown, small head. Initial malty sweetness quickly overpowered by HUGE amount of old school, bitter hops. Nice...!

This was tasted by Cannery Row Beer Club. This is a 2016 that was aged for 1 year. Cheers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home, this is the 2012 vintage rating, the first rating of many vintages to come off the shelf. The head is magnificent, tan and creamy. Aroma of dusty tropical hops, oranges, caramel, toffee, red fruits, ripe pine apple. et al. The body is big with a quite smooth yet bitter palate. Flavors include pine apple, caramel, toffee, nuts, vanilla, oranges, orange peel, grape fruits and sweet malts. Assertive earthy bitterness lingers. As usual this one tends to be an excellent BW when served fresh, then it’s honestly quite boring for a bunch of years up until it’s improving after some +5 years. Can’t wait for the next one...

PREZENTACJA: bursztynowo-rubinowe, przejrzyste z dużą ilością drobin w toni, piana skąpa, żółta, szybko redukuje się do paru śladów na powierzchni i cienkiej obrączki, praktycznie nie zdobi szkła;
AROMAT: bardzo słodki, soczysty, alkoholowy - przejrzałe owoce, brzoskwinie, rodzynki, śliwki, miód, toffi/iryski, golden syrup, po zabełtaniu silny alkohol i trawa, po odstaniu trawa, alkohol i lupulina;
ODCZUCIE: ciało wysokie ku średniemu, średnio nasycone, silnie ziemiste;
SMAK: słodycz w postaci toffi, przejrzałych owoców, brzoskwiń, śliwek, zostaje złamana wyraźną, lekko zalegającą trawiastą goryczką;

3 finger off-white head. Deep, dark brownish red coloured beer. Aroma is dark dried fruits, lemon, oak, tobacco, apricot and tons of caramel malt. Taste fits the description above exactly but with more marmalade sweetness and a floral aftertaste. Big, creamy and ’space-grabbing’ mouthfeel with a dry, really bitter and sweet ending. Super smooth and well balanced despite having a broad field of tastenotes. Overall: Here’s a secret - I don’t care for Barley Wines. Or atleast I didn’t until now. I drank one from Clown Shoes late 2016 and immediately decided it wasn’t for me, then I kept hearing such good stuff about this one that I had to try it because it’s a yearly release. It still isn’t my favorite style but I sure do appreciate it more than before and I even might try a few other ones. Great job on this one Sierra, really well made beer.

2017 bottle. Pours a deep ruby with good lacing from the beige head. Sweet malt, caramel, mixed with large hoppy aroma of citrus and woodsy notes, dark fruit, redskin candy. Sweet red fruit flavour, light booze, large hops verging on syrupy malty IIPA territory. Fizzy front, medium body for the style, lingering bitterness and warmth. I prefer an English barleywine but this fills my big malty hoppy needs well.

vanvenlo (1894) - Glen Iris, AUSTRALIA - MAY 2, 2017
East of Everything ontap (2-May-17) Sweet herbal medicinal sour aroma. Dark amber, good head and ringed lacing. Sweet malt candy flavour. Herbal sweet malt finish and spirit herbal aftertaste.
