COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

(Bottle) Alas - the barleywine that all others are compared! Argo0 was kind enough to bring this up during his trip to Montreal in September of 2003 - Thanks friend! And six months is the longest I've ever waited to sample a beer. Pours a thin, almond head and a clouded, mahogany body. The nose is very plummy, port wine sweet malt. Body has a strong oily texture. Flavour is of those salted black licorice candies, mild plums and heavy malt. Excellent example. Thanks again for the sample, pal!

Great balance with this barleywine. Has lots of floral note within. A bit fuller than Old Horizontal.

This beer suprised me. In the Barley Wine category, it's hard to compare with the Trappists. But this beer was full of flavor and I was feeling nice after just three of these bad boys. Sierra is on of the tops. Tried and true!

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2004 Nice dark carmel collored body with a small tan head. Aroma is strongly alcoholic with big bursts of malt and hops. Tastes like a high octane porter. Flavor is crisp and bitter with a big malty palate and a sharp kick from the alcohol. This is a great beer to keep on hand for those cool starlit nights when only a beer named Bigfoot will do!

Bottle - wow! Big grassy hop nose. Beautiful amber color. Quickly dissipating off white head, but plenty of lacing. As big and creamy a mouthfeel as I've experienced. Can't say much more than THICK! Big, malty and hoppy. A beautiful barleywine.

2003 Vintage: Well I've really been into trying as many Barley Wines as possible lately - this one gets added to the exhaustive list of samples that should have been tried next year - or the year after or the year after..... Gorgeous amber copper ruby brown with thick frothy tan head. Spicy and extremely hoppy with sweet malts and alcohol and citrus on the nose. Malty and rich and laid back fruits and caramel move between each other on the tongue. Beautiful smooth bitter finish - this one will definitely be re-rated higher if I am lucky enough to taste one that has aged longer. As is still quite good.

mmmmmmmm...this beer poured clear dark reddish brown with off-white head with lots of lacing. tasted RICH, malty, with fruity berry overtones. i thought a very complex combination of flavors. a noticable alcohol presence but not overwhelming. aftertaste had a distinct bite of hops. this is a great barley wine!

UPDATED: APR 7, 2006 My Dad wanted me to re-rate this. It’s a lower level barleywine opinion, nice malty character along with alcohol and dried fruits. Not very complex, but very easy to come by.

2003 Vintage: Rich copper in colour. Aroma was very rich, lots of hops, some alcohol, slightly sweet and lots of citrus. Flavour was hoppy up front with some alcohol in the middle changing to malty, caramel sweetness in the back. Finish is smooth and long. Still a little young, I would love to age a few of these. Thanks jeffc666 for sending this to me.

for me, i've been disappointed twice. tried it again thinking i was missing something, but the bottom line for me is i don't really like barely wines that are so so so hopped. too many better balanced alternatives to order this one again.
