Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

2013 batch. Dark coppery red pour with a thick khaki head from a bottle. Smells sweet with malts and some pine from the hops. Bitter up front from the hops but that quickly turns sweet as it warms up and develops in your mouth. Malt is heavy in the after taste. Tastes fresh, will keep a few to age and compare.

Bottle @ home, this is the 2012 vintage rating, the first rating of many vintages to come off the shelf. The head is magnificent, tan and creamy. Aroma of dusty tropical hops, oranges, caramel, toffee, red fruits, ripe pine apple. et al. The body is big with a quite smooth yet bitter palate. Flavors include pine apple, caramel, toffee, nuts, vanilla, oranges, orange peel, grape fruits and sweet malts. Assertive earthy bitterness lingers. As usual this one tends to be an excellent BW when served fresh, then its honestly quite boring for a bunch of years up until its improving after some +5 years. Cant wait for the next one...

PREZENTACJA: bursztynowo-rubinowe, przejrzyste z dużą ilością drobin w toni, piana skąpa, żłta, szybko redukuje się do paru śladw na powierzchni i cienkiej obrączki, praktycznie nie zdobi szkła;
AROMAT: bardzo słodki, soczysty, alkoholowy - przejrzałe owoce, brzoskwinie, rodzynki, śliwki, mid, toffi/iryski, golden syrup, po zabełtaniu silny alkohol i trawa, po odstaniu trawa, alkohol i lupulina;
ODCZUCIE: ciało wysokie ku średniemu, średnio nasycone, silnie ziemiste;
SMAK: słodycz w postaci toffi, przejrzałych owocw, brzoskwiń, śliwek, zostaje złamana wyraźną, lekko zalegającą trawiastą goryczką;
OGLNIE: przyzwoite piwo, takie klasyczne wg mojego odczucia American BW; typowa dla klasycznego BW słodycz to tylko preludium przed pierwszoplanową grą sporej ilości chmielu, ktry jest wyraźnie obecny w aromacie i w smaku; całość całkiem nieźle gra, ale ja jestem zwolennikiem nieco słodszych reprezentantw stylu.

3 finger off-white head. Deep, dark brownish red coloured beer. Aroma is dark dried fruits, lemon, oak, tobacco, apricot and tons of caramel malt. Taste fits the description above exactly but with more marmalade sweetness and a floral aftertaste. Big, creamy and space-grabbing mouthfeel with a dry, really bitter and sweet ending. Super smooth and well balanced despite having a broad field of tastenotes. Overall: Heres a secret - I dont care for Barley Wines. Or atleast I didnt until now. I drank one from Clown Shoes late 2016 and immediately decided it wasnt for me, then I kept hearing such good stuff about this one that I had to try it because its a yearly release. It still isnt my favorite style but I sure do appreciate it more than before and I even might try a few other ones. Great job on this one Sierra, really well made beer.

2017 bottle. Pours a deep ruby with good lacing from the beige head. Sweet malt, caramel, mixed with large hoppy aroma of citrus and woodsy notes, dark fruit, redskin candy. Sweet red fruit flavour, light booze, large hops verging on syrupy malty IIPA territory. Fizzy front, medium body for the style, lingering bitterness and warmth. I prefer an English barleywine but this fills my big malty hoppy needs well.

Pours a rich rustic amber with creamy head. Aroma is Earthy, and piny with hints of vanilla, smoke and tobacco. Very pleasant sweet malty taste followed by a sharp hoppy bitter. More typical characteristics to that of an American strong ale, rather than a barley wine.

12floz bottle, 2012 edition, medium sized snifter (noted tasted to a 2016 version). Appears a cherry wood color, and nose is like candyland meets a deciduous forest. This beer holds up very well, when compared to 2016 it is smoother and does not have as much upfront bitterness. My unsophisticated, cannot tell much beyond those traits. It still has that full chewiness and honey-tobacco under laden by some pine. It seems as if this beer could age another five years and be perfectly fine. The American barleywine standard.
