Dark red with a nice head to it. Strong citrusy hop presence followed by rich sweet malt. The hops fade into a bitter grapefruit aftertaste that lasts through the maltiness. Gets better as it warms, but the grapefruit is still there.

Pours a rich rustic amber with creamy head. Aroma is Earthy, and piny with hints of vanilla, smoke and tobacco. Very pleasant sweet malty taste followed by a sharp hoppy bitter. More typical characteristics to that of an American strong ale, rather than a barley wine.

12floz bottle, 2012 edition, medium sized snifter (noted tasted to a 2016 version). Appears a cherry wood color, and nose is like candyland meets a deciduous forest. This beer holds up very well, when compared to 2016 it is smoother and does not have as much upfront bitterness. My unsophisticated, cannot tell much beyond those traits. It still has that full chewiness and honey-tobacco under laden by some pine. It seems as if this beer could age another five years and be perfectly fine. The American barleywine standard.

UPDATED: APR 15, 2017 Draft at brewery. Ruby red with an off white head. Extremely pretty beer. Aroma is muddled cherries, booze, sugar, berries. Very sweet malts hide the alcohol pretty well. But feeling the warmth and relaxation sweep over. Cherries, cough syrup, berries, easy on the hops side but bitterness shows up in the throat. Pretty sticky, heavy body.

ooooooh christ this is seriously good. Removed the cap with my eye socket to impress my cat. Didnt work. Creamy tan head, super sticky, beautiful hue. Incredible aroma within seconds. Warm smelling despite the actual temp, butterscotch, caramel, mulled cherry, berries, cocoa, honey, apricot, faint pine. Its the malts that win me over. But the aroma is all encompassing. No let down in the flavour dept either. Big malts, toffee, sweetness, caramel, end of taste deep roast lingerings. Pine, honey, berry, maybe apricot, hint anise and pepper on the back. The taste is way more adventurous early on in the pour but it never got out of balanced. Later on it mellows out and those hoppy characters go into hiding. *** A bit of a wait brought back those fruity flavours in force. I guess my palate checked right the fuck out. Zero alc taste in my mouth but my brain is sure tasting it. Pure enjoyment. Had some stupid high score going but I knew I had to check what I had as my top BWs and, yea, this aint no Pelican or Matts. Had to re-score and slot accordingly. Had this 10 or 12 yrs ago and probably thought it was crap. This and some john barleycorn shit from a trip out to the coastish. No clue what the hell what was happening back then.

2013 bottle. Poured into a snifter. A murky amber brown with an inch-thick tan head. Super earthy-herbal malty aromas. Flavor is complex earth-spice with grapefruit and piney bitterness. Very mellow after almost 4 years. Ive had this on draft before, but this cellared version is superior. Very smooth all around. Sharp sweetness is gone.

2017 version. Caramelized malt aroma with piney resinous hops. Taste is caramelized malt bomb, but balanced by lots of hops so that it finishes bitter and dry. No sweetness really. Malt balances the bitter piney hops and mitigates them as well. Ends up a bit too much on the bitter side for me but still a very nice barleywine overall. Full flavored complex alcohol masked well. Just another well done beer by Sierra Nevada. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
