Gold Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival (Ales: Brown, Bitter and Pale 1987, Barleywine 1988,1992,1995). Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is an award winning example of the English Barley Wine style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense, bittersweet palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

Ouch! This beer hurt me. I don't know why they release this beer before it's time. The appearance, color, aroma was all there, but when I took a drink it was all over. This beer was bracingly bitter. Too bitter to enjoy. Too bitter to taste any alcohol, malt or anything. I don't have the means to age some of this, so I can't comment on that. If you do, I highly recommend it.

Bottle at Hundholmen, Bod. One year old. The colour is hazy dark amber to reddish brown with small beige head. Aroma of pine, grass, caramel, apricot and some cocoa and wild berries. Lots of pine and sap in the flavor along with caramel, bread and grassy hops. Has a slick and soft mouth feel, full-bodied and balanced bitterness. A malty and hoppy BW, but well-balanced.

Bigfoot 2015 on feb 2017 Pours a glowing red color with a big, fluffy beige head. Smells of caramel, ripe oranges, dried wild berries, wood bark and fresh cut lemons. Has a soft, lower carbonation, displaying a medium bodied beer, which has a convincing balance to it, although the finish in this is pushing it, in regards of its bitter hop impact. Tastes of toffee malts, glazed caramel and bakers chocolate, together with an earthy note, from which slowly a herbal dryness evolves. Its midpalate is still defined by the malts, but now the hops are easily recognizable for their leafy lemon bite. The finish is a complete turnover, it is utmost bitter and dry, with a ripe, malt accompanied fruitiness cutting through. Wow, this is intense. The beer has a marvellous taste evolution. While it begins like a regular barley wine, sweet, fruity and malty, it finishes unexpectedly dry with a bitter fruit note to it. Very well made and outstandingly well build, everything comes together perfectly in this.

Bottle. Deep reddish-brown colour. Intense flavours. Very heavily hopped (earthy and resinous hops. Very fruity (citrus-grapefruit & orange). Malty (toasty malts, toffee). Very, very dry. Tangy and bittersweet throughout. Very long, very dry, bitter finish. Initially, a bit overpowering in its intensity, but it is very good. Very hoppy Barley Wine. Good stuff. (2008)

Appearance: Pours a deep brown almost cognac-like in color with a thick 3 finger head that has a good staying power. Smell: Resin-like, dried raisin with mild, bitter hoppiness. Taste: Surprisingly subdued alcohol taste but rich in flavor. Dried fruit with a bitter finish. Warm & malt-like character dominates. Very tasty! Mouthfeel: Very smooth as it coats the inside of the mouth like a warm blanket. Dried fruit presence restrained with an almost earthen quality. Aromatic, bitter-sweet & intense malt. Very comforting. Had the 2013 vintage. Pours a beautiful bright orange-red with a thick tan head. Smells great, lots of caramel, vanilla, malts. Taste is bright and fruity to start, with vanilla and caramel, and a bit of hops in the finish. Had on tap at Beermongers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle to snifter that poured a mahogany color with off white head. the aroma was intense malt sweetness with dark fruits and hops. nose seems very well balanced and the flavor proved it. probably still a little hot being 2016 and I have had others that have aged nicely. the flavor is truly an English barley wine nice sweet malts engulfed by the dark fruit and hops mild bitterness.

This rating will surely be added to a ton in the future, as I have had a fun time building a vertical over the last several months or so. Probably the first barleywine I ever loved, but I cant recall having it during my time on this site. While building the vertical, Ive ended up with several duplicates, so I thought it would be fun to open a semi aged duplicate and begin my rating process. 2012 vintage this time around. Reddish copper pour with a rocky tan cream foam head. Incredible barley wine here to sip on and enjoy, and the value versus quality is incredible. Toasty, caramel, bran aroma and flavor. Very smooth. Soft chocolate. An excellent preview to what will be a fantastic lineup of aged beer. This beer is a legend.

2014 Bottle sampled @ SMF. Deep golden orange body with a medium caramel coloured head. Malty aroma with quite a lot of resin and pine. Taste is well balanced. Toffee and caramel malty-sweet flavors mix with bitter resinous hoppy-flavors. Full bodied with soft co2. Nice
