On tap at the brew kettle. Pours clear amber color with off white head. Aroma is mainly alcohol with a touch of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is upfront hops, alcohol, has some alcohol malt, then finishes with a touch of alcohol. So I got no wood, oak, vanilla, bourbon, nothing. After drinking a full glass I went back to the bar and got a sample to watch them pour it from the source. Same beer. I asked the bartender if they somehow messed up. He told me it was the bourbon version. He said everyone there felt the same way about it. That the bourbon was light. I read a previous reviewer that said the beer was aged in used barrels. If thats the case what a waste! All I get is hops and alcohol Just a waste.
on tap @ threepennytaproom. couldn’t place the nose: apple? herbs? cloudy slightly reddish amber, irregular lace, boozy, creamy. brokensail (16432) - Dublin, California, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Amber pour with a small white head. Nice bourbon and wood notes up front with some grapefruit and pone hops lingering in the background. Sweet caramel malts and dark fruits, too. Tastes of sweet fruit, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, and caramel. Nice, but mild bourbon, oak, and vanilla flavors. Some fading citrus and pine hop character on the back end. drpimento (3572) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 9, 2011
Served a bit cold and with a smallish, fine, cream colored head. Color is a very clear honey amber with small bubble trails. Aroma is a mild blend of hop, malt, caramel, vanilla, toffee. Flavor is very similar, but with caramel & malt sweetness, hop bitterness standing out with good carbonic tang to balance. Bourbon is subdued. Body is full, round, but with sharp hop points complementing the great carbonation. Finish is like flavor, with plenty of alcohol warmth, and fairly long. Glad they served in a smaller glass. Good rich beer. Nik925 (795) - USA - JAN 29, 2011
Super super sweet. Very strong malt...could have easily fermented out another 2%. The remaining sugars leave this one like syrup. A very nice and creamy bitterness emerges from the middle but has little hoppyness to follow it up. Very little wood and even less burbon...the barrel was completely used up before this beer was added to it. Disappointing for a special from a brand I like so much.

On tap at Russian River. Copper brown with a creamy off white head. Oak caramel citrus hops and vanilla to the aroma and taste with an oaky alcoholic finish.
