A really good representation of the style, it has a hearty brown color and a full head. It has a nice toasted nutty flavor and a bit of a wood y finish.
Hard to believe I never rated this until today, yikes - slightly embarrassing, wow. Okay, well here’s the rest.
The appearance was semi-clear brown color with some carbonation rising at a decent pace to hit a nice level finger’s worth of white foamy head. Dissipated fairly slow, some light stringy lace.
The aroma had a super nice blend of nuts, coffee, cocoa powder, bread, cereal grains, and caramel/toffee malts. Light grassy hops with a touch herbal to earthiness shining through.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side initially and then develops some of that bitterness from the hops. But not too much as the malts take the lead in the aftertaste and run into the finish in the same nice way.
The feel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Hop abrasiveness wants to collide with the carbonation but clicks with the projected ABV to create an exceptionally smooth yet balanced intrinsic quality on my tongue.

Draft. Dark brown in colour. Malty (roast malts, caramel, nuts, chocolate). Hoppy (some balancing hop bitterness). Sweet malty roasty taste. Dryish roast malty finish. Easy drinking. (2008)

A traditional northern English brown ale and done very well to style. Pours a clear brown color with a nice fluffy brown head. Aroma of caramel, nuts, toasty and just smooth malty sweetness. Draft sample as "Appalachian Brown Ale" at their Mills River Taphouse; clear darker brown color with tan head. Aroma notes of roasted malt, caramel and some nuttiness. Taste adds bread, cocoa and light fruity hops. Light-medium body, low-moderate carbonation, creamy with light fruity roast finish. Pretty solid, if not unremarkable, brown ale.

On tap @ Sierra Nevada. Toasty and lightly roasty beer. Some cocoa, coffee, and a hint of dark fruits. Slight acidity to it, which is kind of off-putting. "ok brown, actually a little hoppier than the style calls for, which can be good or bad depending who you ask. i thought it was so/so...i’ve had better, but far worse. worth trying if you like the style. 1/10-really boring when sampled with their other stuff."

On tap @ Tap and Handle Foco during another massive Sierra Nevada tap takeover. Pours a burnt orange/brown appearance with a light brown head. Biscuity, caramel, slightly nutty, bready aroma. Medium light body. A touch of fruit, pecan, caramel flavor. Moderate high sweetness. Some biscuity notes. Drinks fine but nothing special.
