Its a shame when good barley goes bad. This spring, the combined effect of double digit sustained winds and concentrated rainfall created major stress on the normal course of our barley maturation our crop went down for the count. Instead of crying in our beeror lack thereofwe decided to do one better and make something new. Featuring organic malts and our estate-grown wet hops, this black IPA is the evil twin of our legendary Estate Ale. Black in color with a mild roasty flavor and moderate body, this beer has a bold citrusy and earthy hop flavor and aroma from the use of our own wet hops. Wed never let one bad harvest get in the way of a great beer, so join us in a toast to the memory of our devastating season.

Pours a cola color with copious amounts of tan bubbly head. Aromas of cocoa and toffee. Lots if roasted smells with slight citrus hop notes as well. Flavors of chocolate and deep roasted malts that linger on the palate. Citrus flavors come out in the initial taste that then turns in to more toffee notes as the taste fades. It's almost like the hops and malt are battling one another. For what it is, it's a fantastic beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Had this in the fridge a few years. Pours a cola color with a huge creamy head with tons of sticky lacing. A rich sugary malty aroma. Flavor mirrors aroma with a bitterness throughout.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with small beige head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is roast and floral hop. Medium body, citrus, light roast, bitter finish, good.

Pours a deep dark orangish amber color. Aromas of big hop action, sweet malts, and more hops. Flavor has some caramel malty tastes with nice grapefruit and floral hop taste.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears nearly black in the glass, with dark mahogany edges and a frothy, two finger beige head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap/ring. The retention is crazy, almost too good, taking forever to settle. The glass is left coated with rings and chunks of soapy lacing. The dank, earthy hops and smokey roasted dark malts combine for a very odd, metallic-like aroma with a strong phenol/chemical character that is very unpleasant. Resinous pine sap, grass, dirt/soil and spruce tip followed by smoke, charcoal, roasted malt, coffee bean and oatmeal. Theres a touch of caramel sweetness in the nose but the hop and malt combination makes it smell like phenolic bandaid. Everything seems to clash and scream, "Dont drink this"! Thankfully this beer tastes a lot better than it smells. The solvent-like chemicals and phenols that I picked up in the nose are nowhere to be found. The hop and malt flavors are better integrated than I expected. The hop profile is still kind of one dimensional, however, with lots of dry, earthy bitterness. Resinous oil, sticky buds, grass, pine tree and spruce tip flavor give this beer overwhelming bitterness thats decently cut by the complex flavors of the malt bill. The malts are pretty robust and smokey but theres some underlying sweetness that balances things out. The smoked and charred malt compliment the hop bitterness with hints of charcoal, burnt toast, deeply roasted coffee bean and oatmeal. This is countered by bittersweet dark chocolate, toffee and slight caramel flavor. A bit harsh and nit the mist balanced beer but after the palate adjusts to the bitterness, this beer becomes decently drinkable.

Bottle was actually a few years old. Got stuck in back of beer fridge. Thought it would be yucky...but not bad. Poured a light black with some head. Aroma is slightly burnt malts, roasted veggies, pine, and dark breads. The taste is burnt malts, pine and pine resin, almost a chewy dark chocolate and some anise. Good carb and medium body. Very nice.

Bomber. Had to fight with the wax but persevered. Dark amber brown with a big fluffy tan head that lasts. Some lacing. An aroma of roast with soft fruit and earth. First sip makes me question this being an IPA. Just minimal hops. That is tasted until the beer warms up. Then gentle citrus fruit is tasted. A hint of chocolate and grain. Herbal notes with warming, too. As I look at the bottle it is from 2013 so I see why the hops have lessened. A nice rich feel. This has a lot going for it. Hops might have faded but there is plenty more to like.
