Bottle 75 cl. Pours a dark brown with an orange hue and a creamy, beige head. Spicy, oxidized aroma of dark, dried fruits - mushy. Rich and filling body, dark dried fruits, slightly peppery with a warming alcohol finish. Interesting and complex. 081114 slowrunner77 (12040) - Reno, Nevada, USA - OCT 5, 2014
"pours a deep mahogony brown with a big fluffy tan head. nice lookin beer. as a prefeace, i’m a huge DFH fan, so-so on SN. I think they’re good, but i don’t get as excited as some. the usual sweeter DFH beer with the ever present hopping of SN intruiged me, though. That said, it’s not a very hoppy beer, but is balanced (more than i thought it would be) and very complex. fruit, syrups (birch & maple) in the aroma more subdued than i expected. some hop balance too. same in flavor with some chocolate too. strong, but toally hides the abv. smooth and full. nice lingering heavy finish. sweet, but balanced. i’m gonna age on too, but it’s quite good now. 8/11 gotta bump my score up a touch from a 3.9 as this beer ages incredibly well. a 2 year old keg on it’s own would score well into the 4’s..." Batch 2, 750 mL bottle.
Aroma has a fairly strong syrup note with with moderate dark fruit notes of figs, plums and prunes with light cherry and raisin character. Light honey notes with medium roast and toasted bread and light chocolate. Medium caramel and toffee along with light alcohol spice.
Pours a dark brown, almost black with a thick, dark tan head with really nice retention. Fairly high amount of lacing with somewhat small legs.
Flavor starts slightly sweet and fairly malty with a lot of toasted bread, moderate roast, and lighter notes of caramel, toffee and chocolate. Syrup note is present, but lighter than in the aroma. Flavor has a bit of a tootsie roll note to it. Moderate bitterness with light alcohol spice. Light dark fruit esters and a faint hint of honey.
Mouthfeel is medium full to full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a better beer than I was expecting and the syrup notes have held up surprisingly well. Nice malt character that works well with the syrup. Alcohol is pretty well hidden and the dark fruit and honey notes integrate nicely. hopwine (670) - brooklynzzzzz, New York, USA - MAY 4, 2014
Batch #2. Pours almost black with some reddish light struggling through, beautiful light tan, cake like head. Nose is pecan, caramel, toffee. Flavor is pecan pie, some age derived dried fruit and sherry, mild hints of roast, and flan. Mouthfeel seems to have thinned slightly from the mega chewy monster I remember... But that could just be a palate shift. Anyhow, age did this one right, so glad I have another. troyc (2869) - Illinois, USA - APR 20, 2014
