An aggressive new hop varietal plays tricks on the mind in this bold Double IPA. Though the beer has never seen the inside of a barrel, HBC 472 lends it a distinctive oaky, barrel-aged character. Jackson 104 brings heavy fruit-forward and citrus-like flavors to the beer, while Steiner 07270 rounds out the hop finish with deep, resinous notes of dank pine and grapefruit for a complex and powerful beer.

   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 12/20
shigadeyo (3870) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - FEB 18, 2018
2/17/2018 (12 fl oz can): Aroma of orange citrus candy, caramel malt, and a touch of oak; clean, coppery orange color with a fluffy off-white head; pine, orange-caramel syrup, pithy bitterness, floral, naturally fermented tropical fruits, sharp resin bitterness and some alcohol in the finish; medium body, smooth and slick mouthfeel; solid, but not great, I'm really not loving the experimental hop profile in this mix pack selection, the Sierra Nevada Wet Hop beers were far better.

Beaver (1906) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - MAR 19, 2018
12 oz can. Pours clear golden orange with a big rocky off white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet bready malts and piney hops with a little fruit. It's a bit subdued.

The flavor is sweet bready malts with some fruit and spicy resiny hops and a slightly harsh alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK DIPA.

hopdog (13466) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 18, 2018
12oz can. Poured a lightly hazy golden color with a medium sized head. Citrus, some fruits and caramel.

CObiased (580) - Bayfield, Colorado, USA - MAR 18, 2018
12oz can - the appearance is a clear amber/copper color with a fluffy yellowish off white head. Not much aroma but I do detect caramel malt, pine and earth. The flavor is a bit better with an upfront floral, earthy hop that moves to a resinous pine hop flavor all the while with a caramel maltiness in the background. Meh

mcberko (20483) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 17, 2018
12 oz. bottle, pours a hazy dark amber orange with a small white head. Aroma is very malty and sweet, with caramel malts, cough syrup, and resinous hops. Flavour is sweet and lacking hoppy oomph, with sweet caramel, light cough syrup, and light resinous hops. Not too impressive.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2018 Worst IPA I have ever had from Sierra Nevada. There is a nasty bourbon whiskey flavor that overpowers the flavor/finish. The experimental pack was a disappointment. Hop Double IPA the worst and Session IPA second worst. The Hop IPA and Hop Pilsener were decent.

fidelis83 (2570) - Clinton, Iowa, USA - MAR 13, 2018
Clear deep amber pour with a two finger, fluffy, off white head that has good retention. Aroma is citrus, oaky vanilla and dank, a little must woodiness, bread, cracker, caramel and toasted pine wood. Flavor is really oaky and nutty up front, some cereal dank, cooked citrus and berries, and some deep floral and herbal notes. Medium body, syrupy, somewhat boozy-warm and slightly oily feel, light, but sharp carbonation. Good stuff, a little too boozy, but the oaky-like flavors help.

Aggiebob (1486) - Huntsville, Alabama, USA - MAR 10, 2018
UPDATED: MAR 11, 2018 Can. It poured gold with a white head and minimal lacing. The aroma was lightly hoppy with dank resinous pine notes. There is moderate bitterness to it.

Copper pour with a thin soapy white head and light sticky lacing ..... aroma of orange, grapefruit, pine and some dankness .... taste def comes off oaky, dank, grapefruit and pine with mostly orange .... has a light rindy, but mostly dank and dry lightly hopped back end .... finish is dry, piney, grapefruit and orange .... some floral and oak in there as well .... abv hidden well, average dbl IPA

malrubius (3155) - Springfield, Vermont, USA - MAR 6, 2018
Can from Brewfest. Clear copper with lasting fluffy head and lace. Piney woody earthy herbal with some lingering fruit aroma. Medium-heavy honey peachy light caramel cereal biscuit sweetness with medium piney earthy herbal bitterness in entirely unpleasant long finish. Medium body slick and a little sticky, medium carbo. Not all experiments are successful. Case in point. Now what do I do with the other two cans?

AndyW68 (1672) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - MAR 3, 2018
Clear orange pour with than white head. Aroma leans more to the bis uit roasted malt than to pine or citrus. Taste brings orange a little forward. Not bad.
