bottle. Pours a black color with small beige head. Aroma is coffee, cocoa, and roasted chocolate malt. Roasty chocolate malt flavor, somewhat sweet. Lingering coffee on the palate. Full bodied and tasty.

DandyWolfFloyd (1260) - Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 7, 2015
Aroma - roasted barley malts, with espresso, licorice, honey like booze, and resin hops. Appearance - black body, with a 1/4" beige head that rings out. Taste - have a fair amount of roast - with a bit of astringency, some licorice, espresso, richest of dark chocolate - even a bit of honey or caramelized sugars. Palate - is medium, the texture, slick and sticky, the carbonation is soft, the finish astringent from the rich roast. It is long and strong. Beasty of a beverage. Kudos Sierra Nevada!

Bottle. Pours inky black with large spongy tan head, roasted malt aroma, medium carbonation, bitter chocolate, roasted malt and caramel taste, thick body alcohol undertones, long bitter finish. Very thick and satisfying brew.

A: Pitch black with a nougat two finger head. N: Coffee, caramel, chocolate, chocolate fudge, some dried fruits, butterscotch, liqourice, seaweed T: Chocolate, coffee, caramel, liqourice O: Lovely stout! Well hidden alcohol. Loads of flavours.

Pitch black. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt. Taste, even more pronouced. Really good stuff. I loved the 2013 edition, thought the 2014 was slightly worst, but this brings it back on track! One favourite is back!

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2018 355 ml bottle from Systembolaget. Pitch-black with a smal mocha head. strong aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, caramel. Taste reflects the aroma, but its more straight forward, with more roast and burnt coffee. Full-bodied. High bitterness. And low carbonation. Quite boring after a few sips :/

Bottle from Whole Foods Lenox. Dark black body with thin head. Nose is oily, malty, spicy. tasty. Flavour is nice of oils and malts and fruts. Good stuff. Warming finish.

Aromas of alcohol, dark fruits and dark chocolate, as well as roasted coffee and malts. Taste is roasted malts and coffee, as well as dark fruits and dark chocolate. Some faint black licorice as well in the finish.

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2016 Packaged on 11/3/15, my bottles of Narwhal are still pretty fresh. While I’ve decided to write my review and record my notes after the initial tasting, I’m planning to age the other two and update my notes as needed. If I can be allowed to milk the nautical theme, Narwhal pours deep sea black with tan colored foam on the surface. Aroma propels cocoa, bold coffee, booze. Flavor is bettersweet, roasty, and complex. Feel is full and dry. Even Sierra Nevada’s malt-forward beers tend to be aggressive. With 60 IBU’s, I thought Narwhal might be like that too. Surprisingly, it’s more rich than bitter, even in its freshest state. I’m looking forward to seeing how this will change. Update: 9/1/16 - Chocolate, molasses, and black currant coming out more. This is still a robust beer but the bitterness is beginning to mellow.

ARH (1139) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 26, 2015
12oz bottle poured into a snifter. There’s a slight acetone aroma initially, but this fades, and is replaced by cocoa, coffee, raisin, and sweet bourbon caramel with a light, faint hint of wood. It pours jet black with a viscosity to the pout and topped by a brown, frothy head that has moderate retention and leaves a light, messy lace. The taste is a high bitter cut by a medium high sweetness that strengthens late to balance it out. The beer is thick and creamy with a soft foamy carbonation and a full body that’s woody with dark chocolate and raisin notes and turns smokey with caramel and resin before finishing with a smokey pine and roasted character with a sharp bourbon warmth that ducks away quickly and turns to dark chocolate raisins. The aftertaste is smokey wood, caramel and chocolate nuts with a mild lingering quality.
