2012 vintage - Pours pitch black with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, vegetables and licorice. Taste is roasty , sweetish and salty with notes of licorice, coffee and hints of vegetables. Finish is roasty, salty and bitter with hints of licorice. Okay IS.
Black with a thick beige/light brown head. Aroma of nutty, roast malt, coffee, chocolate, bread, yeast. Taste is sweet with a light sour and bitter finish. Thick oily texture, low carbonation. Good beer. jake65 (3701) - Meridian, Idaho, USA - DEC 30, 2013
Bottle, fresh 2013 vintage. Very dark brown pour with a modest brown head. Light bits of lacing throughout and a small head retained for the entire glass. Good roast and espresso notes, a little sweetness from the molasses. Bittersweet cocoa plays a minimal role, sort of overshadowed by the lingering smokiness. I like the amount of hops now, but in my mind this is begging to be cellared… better make room next to the Bigfoot. Still, served fresh is a pretty fine experience.

Vintage 2012, end of 2013. Black with a lasting tan head. Roasted aroma of licorice, coffee beans, caramel and dark sugar, with quite a bit of alcohol showing. Thick and sweet flavour with licorice and burned notes, and plenty of hop presence and a bit of warm alcohol. Classic American imperial stout, in no need of barrel aging and rare coffee blends... (Bottle, 2013): Pours black with a lovely mocha coloured head. Aroma of molasses, dark fruits, roasted malt, smoke, chocolate and a slight hint of alcohol. Flavour is very sweet dark fruits, chocolate, charred wood, choco-malt, vinous notes and again, some alcohol. Mouthfeel is fantastic and the beer itself is dangerously drinkable for 10.2%. The aroma is malt - slight chocolate, slight coffee, roasty. Pours black with a caramel brown frothy head, mostly diminishing, very good lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture creamy just a little thin, the carbonation fizzy and the finish bitter. Very good. Alextricity (509) - Michigan, USA - DEC 29, 2013
I’m surprised that this beer "only" scores a 92... what in the. Poured into a shaker pint.
Appearance: Pitch black. Tan head. Poured nicely. A bit of lacing, but not much.
Smell: Chocolate. Some smoke. A lot of roast. Not much in terms of dark fruits.
Taste/feel: Well, that’s some damn good stuff. Chocolate and roastiness, as you’d expect. Some smoke. Dark fruits in there a little bit (mostly as it warms), but not too much. Alcohol is hidden well as far as flavor goes, but there’s a definite warmth there. A bit more "harsh" than some other RIS’s, I suppose. The feel isn’t quite as full bodied as some others I’ve had, which is a slight knock, but still excellent. Drinks a bit too easily.
Fantastic beer. Not much else to say about that. Underrated, in my opinion. Stands up well to some other, perhaps more popular, RIS’s. BeerBeforeH20 (129) - Minnesota, USA - DEC 28, 2013
Near black pour with a quickly fading khaki head. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, and dark sweet fruits. There is also a hint of booze mixed in with the aroma. Taste is a well balanced delight to sip on, nice mix of dark fruit and maltiness. Overall a great beer, very well done.
