Pours dark black with small white head. Smells of coffee and has similar taste. Rich in flavor and is complimented by smokiness and hop bite. Smooth going down and is quite delightful.

considering the fact that this was followed by Budwieser it seems like the greatest beer ever made. in reality its a good beer that i could sit back and just drink and not be overwhelmend by a single flavor, a good balance of flavors.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2005 Bottle (12oz) - Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev - courtesy of yours truly. Poured dark brown, clear, with a small quick-vanishing light tan head. Aroma of pure cocoa dark chocolate, plenty of hops, espresso, roasted malt and a hint of fruit. Taste started creamy-chocolate sweetish and quickly morphed to a coffee-hop bitter - ultimately dominated by the bitterness, which lingered on for quite some time. Mouthfeel was creamy and acidic, with average body for the type. I liked it, but their stout is better and their pale ale is ... terrific. Decent porter, if a little one-dimensional.

UPDATED: JUL 14, 2007 July 2007. Bottle at beerbistro. Glad I decided to re-rate this, as it was much better on this occasion. Black body with a small tan head. Green hoppy aroma with underlying muted dark roast malt. Moderately bitter flavour is a melange of hop and roast bitterness. (7+) Average palate is a bit thinner than I like my porters but seems to work for it. 7+/3/7+/3/15 - 3.6 <P>August 2005. Very dark brown, not quite black, body. Small tan head lacks longevity. Vaguely smoky ashen aroma, mild acidity that carries over to the flavour. Acidic ashen notes over dry malt, some bitterness. Mild roast in the finish. Dry bitter aftertaste lingers. Thin to average palate. Better beer than I am showing here, but it is not for me. 5/3/6/3/12 - 2.9

UPDATED: JAN 10, 2008 bottle. Pours nice solid dark, dark brown with a good solid head. The aroma is filled with roastiness and a distinct malty sweetness. The flavor is all there for a porter: excellent roasted notes, good caramelly sweetness, and a pleasing, though somewhat low, level of hops. Satisfying, lingering smoky finish. ------ 10, 2008]<------- Here I am drinking a bottle of this stuff again. It is a well rounded porter I must say. There is plenty of roasted coffee, some light coconut milk, soy sauce, and a pronounced nuttiness. I find a whisper of hops here and there, but its all about the malt on this one. This is a favorable example of the style.

Medium of the range Porter. Cola syryp black. Taste of malts throughout...didnt get much of a hop tickle. Much better as it comes to room temp.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2005 A nicely balanced Porter - medium bodied and medium carbonated - sweet malts with an aftertaste of hop bitterness - caramel and roasted malts with a hint of licorice - smokey, too. Enjoyable.

Generally, Sierra Nevada underwhelms me with their over-hyped selection of beers. However, this was an enjoyable surprise. A dark roasted porter with a burnt smoky finish. Highly flavorful and drinkable by the pitcher

Sierra Nevada has an uncanny ability to mass produce beer and keep their high standards of quality. This especially shines through in their porter. A very dark beer that goes down smooth and has just the right amount of bitterness. If you enjoy porters, give this one a shot.
