3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle and served in my ye olde SN pint glass (this is my third bottle so I guess I should rate this now...) : Pours a clean coppery hue with a rocky frothy head and okay lace. The aroma has notes of PNW piney, citric, dank and peppery hop esters along with some rye bread, biscuit, and slight lactic presence. The taste is much more straight forward DIPA than a rye beer, heavy on the citric twang and pine needles. Very earthy and slightly metallic along with a punch of pepper and clove. The rye does make an appearance towards the finish but do not expect the flavor profile of a herbal beer here... this is all about the hops. The mouth feel is sprite and aggressive, a tad metallic and boozy. Perhaps too much to be something I would want to drink more than one of in a session. Overall I like this brew but do wish the rye component was more forceful and I do wish this showed less of that "SN yeast profile". That said, my other three bottles will not be going to waste.
January 28th, 2015 - Rye seems to be in now, and whenever a trendy brew style comes and goes, I make a point of seeing what Sierra Nevada does with it. The Rye IPA trend is manifest in the Ruthless Rye IPA, an amber brew with a delicate hop aroma. Brusque and slightly metallic, the steely nature of the nose is complemented by touches of bubble gum and dried cranberry. There is more sweet and spice on the tongue than in the nose, with some hops bitterness playing second fiddle to the slightly sweet and nutty side of the flavor profile. The combination works nicely, and demonstrates Sierra Nevada's continued skill at balance. Chadhami (195) - - MAY 18, 2017
A good, dark IPA. Part of the variety pack, probably best in the box. Smooth and flavorful. weordie (1472) - Tyne & Wear, ENGLAND - JAN 22, 2017
Pours a wonderful reddish colour with an off white head. Aroma is mainly caramel now, the bottle is a year old though, however I love the smell. Lovely caramel malt flavours mixed with a rye spiceyness. I can only imagine how great this was fresh as it’s top notch a year a on. ghostbeer (250) - Nebraska, USA - DEC 7, 2016
Wonderful hop character with great rye spiciness that is offset nicely by the other malt. It would have been easy for the brewer to go on the heavy end and ruin it, but this is very nice. alex_leit (5316) - Minsk, BELARUS - NOV 9, 2016

*Very nice mix of citrus and floral hops on a floral and nice "darker" grainy body. Great citrus in comparison to the rye. Round and deep, easy to drink, great! fombe89 (4248) - Asturias, SPAIN - AUG 29, 2016
