COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before Sierra Nevada was a reality, our founders brewed beer at home and dreamed of building a brewery one day. Back then, they brewed the beers they wanted to drink—bold and full of flavor. Stouts had always been a favorite, so when we needed a big and rich beer to test out the brewing system at our fledgling brewery, stout was the obvious choice. Thirty years later, not much has changed. We’re still brewing the beers we want to drink and our classic Stout is the same as it’s ever been—big, rich, bold, black as night and filled with the wild-eyed passion of which dreams are made.
Yeast: Ale yeast
Bittering Hops: Bravo

Chudwick (3441) - Taylor Mill, Kentucky, USA - APR 10, 2012
12oz bottle - pours clack with lots of beige head and nice lacing. Nose is roasted malts, chocolate and Cascade hops. Flavor adds caramel malts. Taste is all around bitter a wee bit sweet to the lips. Pretty tasty for hoppier than I would expect from a stout, but then again this is from California.

Pours a reddish deep brown, almost black coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells richly of dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of licorice. Taste follows the nose with a very nice balance of dark chocolate and coffee flavours, complemented by a hint of caramel, licorice and a medium bitterness. Body is just a little bit thin, but smooth and velvety. For a non-imperial stout, this is actually quite nice. An easy-drinking, very solid go-to Stout that lacks the complexity and creamy mouthfeel of its higher ABV brethern.

DraftDodger (1801) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - NOV 5, 2017
Copenhagen 5/11 2017. 35,5 cl bottle from Fakta. Sierra Nevadas usual label style with idyllic drawing of what I suppose is the Brewery. Pours opaque dark brown with light beige head. Settles as very thin layer of foam barely covering the surface of the beer. A lot of Lacing. Aroma is strong and rich. Coffee, dark chocolate and notes of bitterness lurking in the background. Medium carbonation and thick sticky palate. Flavor is not as intense as promised by the aroma. Medium sweet followed by quite strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter coffee. Fine surpringly bitter stout.

From Aug 2007 Pours from 12oz bottle(with twist off cap) a near pitch black with some reddish hues and a good 2 finger head of foam that loses some substance during the seesion but by the time my glass is almost empty, there's still a solid layer with plenty of lacing. The smell is sweetish. I get a lot of caramel and roasted malt and it's nice. The taste has some sweet malt initially but more flavours come into play. Roasted malt follows with a very small hot chocolate presence...well, it's not so small after all as it's giving a good bitter kick to this stout about midway through and it dominates the finish very nicely but that sweet malty goodness lasts right through from the start to the finish. Man, it's hitting my taste buds on all cylinders and I'm really enjoying sipping on this excellent version of an American Stout and..the lowish abv helps make it a very drinkable brew. As far as I'm concerned, this is a classic American Stout and if you've overlooked this one before, give it a shot and I don't think you'll regret it. Highly recommended!
