Before Sierra Nevada was a reality, our founders brewed beer at home and dreamed of building a brewery one day. Back then, they brewed the beers they wanted to drink—bold and full of flavor. Stouts had always been a favorite, so when we needed a big and rich beer to test out the brewing system at our fledgling brewery, stout was the obvious choice. Thirty years later, not much has changed. We’re still brewing the beers we want to drink and our classic Stout is the same as it’s ever been—big, rich, bold, black as night and filled with the wild-eyed passion of which dreams are made.

Citrus, herbal hop and roasted malt character. Similar flavor, plus some caramel/sweet malt flavor, with maybe a little roasted acidity. Aftertaste has some coffee-like bitterness. Nice lingering Cascade flavor.

2015 BJCP Category:20B American Stout

AROMA: Strong hop presence of pine, resin and slight citrus (seems a bit too hoppy for the style). Moderate dark malt presence with some coffee character (I’d prefer more maltiness). 8/12

APPEARANCE: Very dark brown hue (39-43 SRM); large tan frothy foam. Retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: High hop flavor and bitterness throughout. Citrusy up front with more dank resiny/piney flavor on the back end. Base malt is dark but not particularly sweet, though there is a coffee and roasted malt taste on the finish. Seems a bit too hoppy for the style; needs more malt flavor. 14/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; medium-low carbonation. Smooth, though hops and roasted malts leave a slightly drying aftertaste. Feels a bit lighter than 5.8% ABV. No alcohol presence. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: A West Coast style stout bordering on Black IPA. Good, but is it really to style? 6/10

Dark copper, tall brown head. Coffee nose, intense. Full body, creamy texture, full flavored, soft, well carbonated, low heat mouthfeel, good length, clean finish. Bitter, dry, gentle acidity. Dense coffee flavor, as if mellowed by cream like latte, dark roasted grains, somewhat smoky and ashy. Tasty, big but not massive stout, well balanced, a pleasure to drink if you like it dry. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Birra dal colore marrone scuro. Schiuma beige, fine e persistente. Al naso sentori di caffè, malto tostato e crosta di pane nero abbrustolito. Al palato si riprentano le stesse note percepite al naso. Una buona stout.

The color is black with beige creamy head, looking nice. Aroma is little roasty, coffee notes and touch of toffee. Taste is well balanced with bitterish start and dry sweet finish, flauvour of coffee. Very nice stout.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2017 Probably Sierra Nevada’s most underrated beer. Pours a lovely deep dark brown, almost black, and gives up a moderate off-white head with minor lacing. Nose isn’t great, offering modest mocha notes backed by pine. The taste rocks, however, dry and bitter, roasted unsweetened chocolate against an espresso background, offset by the slightest hint of caramel. Stays restrained, never going overboard on the cocoa or coffee, instead gaining a piney hop bitterness on the back end, leading to a bitter, dark roast java fade. Creamy texture only adds to the repeat drinkability. Classic session stout.
