Wulfstan's rating

   AROMA 9/10   APPEARANCE 5/5   TASTE 10/10   PALATE 5/5   OVERALL 20/20

This Baltic poter is outstanding, with rich, complex flavour and texture, yet high drinkability. Basically black, it has a very large, rich, frothy light brown head that shrinks only slowly to a permanent, thin, foamy top and rich, frothy lace. The aroma is mild wine, chocolate, prunes, toast. Although with firm, complex elements, it’s somewhat subdued. The taste is rich, complex, smooth and clean. All flavours, sweetness and bitterness are beautifully balanced with complex taste of leaves, chocolate, dark toasted brown bread, prunes, a hint of port, some raisin, black pepper, the latter stronger in the finish, with an increasing taste of black coffee condensed with brown sugar that is stronger by the end. It is rather dry throughout, not too bitter or sweet. In the middle, it has a definite but light sweetness and light but slightly stronger bitterness right at the finish, but for most of the time, up front and in the final finish and aftertaste, it is mostly dry, clean, and leafy.

Pours black with foamy head that lingers with lacing. Aroma is coffee, hops and smoke. Taste is chocolate and roast, with a smooth, creamy finish. A very good baltic porter.

Bottle - 330ml. Pours an opaque black body with an average, lasting, beige creamy head. Robust, complex malty aroma with hoppy, earthy, tobacco, woody, plummy, and roasty hints. Its rich malty taste carries woody, and liquorice notes. It is not as complex as the aroma. Ends with a long woody/roasty, moderately warming finish. Very good.

Curious as to how long ago this bottle began its journey to the States--kinda tastes like it might have been brewed during the Reagan administration. I mean, it's not a bad porter, but the malts have a definite aged quality to them, coming off musty and unexpectedly tart, lots of berry and burnt sugar mixing in with the dark-roast-coffee notes. Semisweet chocolate and raisin and licorice make an appearance, and the finish remains appreciably dry and clingy, but the sour notes keep growing as the pint warms. Caramel and slight java on the nose, while the pour comes out black with brown edges and a tan head but no lace. Good feel, but otherwise I'm pretty baffled by the love shown towards this beer.

From a bottle, pours inky black with a thick dark tan head. Malt and coffee nose, dark fruit and licorice taste. Delicious burnt malt finish.

330ml bottle from a bottleswap with rosenbergh, thanks a lot!

Malty and coffee aroma with a bit of red fruit scents. Taste is a bit sweet and fruity with cherry dominance in a coffee thick porter.

Dark chocolate, most pralines, Ovaltine, toasted dark malts, light coffee, dark roast. Black, medium, creamy, beige head. Light bitter. More chocolate, cacao, filter coffee, dark roasted malts, lightly charred, soft carbonation, full bodied. Nice Baltic Porter, rich and intense, yet well-balanced, happy to see a macro doing one beer right. Bottle at Finnair Premium Lounge, Helsinki.

Bottle from Beers of the World. Pours black with thick tan head. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts.

GIJOE (1256) - North Berwick, Maine, USA - MAY 27, 2017
Bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, NY. Pours black like used motor oil, completely opaque, huge light brown head that stays long; sparse lacing. Nose is roasted malt and chocolate with yeast and nut notes; a hint of ash. Taste is quite well balanced with sweet maltiness and nice dark chocolate bitterness. Medium bodied brew with a rich, creamy mouthfeel. Excellent porter.
