330ml bottle at The New Penguin. Pitch with a loose marbled tan head. Meaty smoked mackerel bourbon nose with burnt custard, blackberry and well-scorched oak. Brilliant incinerated blackberry crumble and custard flavour sweet with oak and bitter with roast. Beautifully smoked Bamberg Bacon, pecan and flamed toffee afters. 330 ml bottle. Pours a pitch black colour with a small creamy head. Aroma of sweet bourbon notes, some mild berryish notes and chocolate. Flavour is very smooth with roasted malts, vanilla, milk, strong sweet bourbon, biscuit and chocolate. Medium bodied, very smooth and soft mouthfeel with soft carbonation. For someone who hasn’t tasted any barrel aged beers this would be a great introduction. Very smooth and easy, not very complex, but the barrel is well presented. Tasted on 2/7/14 from a bottle at the Friday night tasting at RBWG Asheville, big thanks to Leighton for sharing. Pours dark oily brown with an average brown head that leaves an average collar of lace. The nose is dry coffee, chocolate brownie, along with some vanilla and coconut oak. The flavor is the same with the chocolate brownie, and even a bit more oak than the nose. The body is full with just under average carbonation and a long bourbon brownie finish. Bottle from Siren, Friday 21st February 2014 directly from brewery door, consumed at home Thursday 27th February 2014 Pours black with a small tan head, there is a little bit of coca cola in the mouth. Interestingly this is not as meaty as the Buffalo Trace version. There is more whisky on nose with this one, perhaps more than I expected. Bottle shared at RBWG, the Friday night Dumptown Inn bottle share. Pours a deep brown with a beige head. Notes of chocolate, charred oak, tobacco, burnt sugar, and molasses - the bourbon and vanilla notes don’t jump out quite as much. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, rich mouthfeel. Good barrel aged stout; I’d be interested to try the other versions.
