Alengrin (5722) - BELGIUM - OCT 25, 2017
Dark Belgian-style strong ale aged on Speyside barrels, in collaboration with De Ranke. Very thick, cobweb-lacing, coarse, moussy, egg-white head over a misty dark caramel bronze coloured beer with burgundy hue. Aroma of caramel sauce and butterscotch candy, rum-soaked raisins, chestnuts, dried figs, marmelade, sweet pipe tobacco somewhere, ruby port, date compote, dried banana, some woodiness and a hint of whisky. Sweet onset, dried fig and raisins with a very light sourish edge, medium carbonation, full and very supple, bit resiny mouthfeel, slick and a tad oily. Thorough caramelly malt sweet body, very butterscotch-like with a chestnutty accent, some light toasted bread in the end matching with a spicy hop bitter touch and warming, indeed (non-peaty) whisky-like alcohol, with again only a thin slice of woodiness next to it; the residual sugary sweetness, reminiscent of treacle, candied fig and even honey, lingers, but is dried somewhat by the whisky, so that everything ends clean and to the point. Very well done, cleaner than your average artisanal Belgian dubbel or quad, a pleasantly warming, sweet, filling sipper, I liked this version a bit more than the Islay one.

Donker robijnrood bier met schuim. Smaak is krachtig en licht zoet met iets van karamel, bittere chocolade en vanille.

Bottle - Dark malts and cocoa notes. Jet brown with a rich beige head. Rich chocolate and a nice touch of toffee. There is a nice grainy sweetness that may be the whisky that gives this a very pleasant mellow taste throughout.

jfb (6659) - GERMANY - FEB 21, 2017
(keg) hazy brown colour with a small frothy beige head, rather cola-esque. aroma of heavy peach cobbler and brown sugar, with a light touch of liquorice, some strawberries and caramel. flavour is mostly the same, big peaches, some vanilla and roasted malts, with only a light hint of ethanol, some physalis, more stone fruit, cold coffee and a semi-dry watermelon finish. heavy-bodied with soft carbonation.

December 2016 - Bottle share at Leighton’s. As ’Six Degrees North ATC 1.2 Speyside’, a collab with De Ranke. Dark ruby red, opaque, foamy tan head, full lacing. Aroma is red berry, jam tart, some toffee, musty. Not really the vibe I was expecting. Body is light, tingly to spritzy carbonation, a bit frothy. Taste is a mix of light buttery whisky, redcurrant and boiled sweets with a tangy and dry finish. (3.4)

Bottle at home, 8th January 17. Pours a dark beer. Aroma is dark fruit, mollasses, dark sugar, barrel, maybe some liquor. Taste is rich, dark fruit, dark brown sugar, slight barrel liquor, could be more. Quite nice.
