Barrel-Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout • ABV: 10.5% • IBUs: 55 One of two sixtels left in existence on planet earth, this special J.D. Willet bourbon barrel aged elixir was born in the caves in Kentucky and somehow one of them ended up at the Holiday Ale Fest! EBF 2014. Kinda tastes like every boring BA regular stout I’ve tried before. A hint roasty, too much bourbon masking the beer, not all that drinkable despite the lower abv. Not crazy about BA Sixpoint stuff.

Draft @ Craft Bar PCB. Loads of barrel, creamy caramel, vanilla, oak, smooth bourbon, a bit boozy. Lovely.

On tap at the HAF14 in PDX. Pours a jet black color with a medium beige head. A big woody bourbon nose with dark chocolate. The flavor is vanilla, sugary, light shots of bourbon, roast, light dark fruit. Very good. Balanced. Big and boozy.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma is wood, whiskey, vanilla, chocolate, and hint of coffee and roast. The barrel-aging really takes this one over and covers the stouty flavors with a thick layer of whiskey and wood. I wouldn’t exactly say it is in a bad way, but as the previous rater pointed out, this is one of the pitfalls of the barrel-aged approach.

Draught at The Beer Trappe. Light stout/porter body with touch of bourbon and a nice aroma. That oatmeal stout slightly creamy presence. Good.

Draft to taster. This beer is listed as 10.5%, both on the beer menu and on Untappd. Looks good; a translucent dark brown with foamy beige head. Smells good too; dark malt, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and bourbon. Tastes like it smells, but more chocolate. Nice and smooth on the palate. Good beer!

Échantillonné du Extreme beer fest 2014: Une stout robuste moyennement sucrée avec une touche de tabac fûmé et des tanins délicats.
