COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
SMP is a Smoked Baltic Porter.
Sixpoint SMP is unique creation from a place like no other in the world - Brooklyn. In our neighborhood, a classic industrial sector, we are constantly reminded of the manufacturing and industry that made Brooklyn famous. I wanted to make a unique beer that combined all of the unique traditions of my favorite beer style... Porter. Like the Baltic countries of Europe, our company resides close to the ocean. And like the industrial revolution in England, Brooklyn is home to the industry of the world’s capital. It was only fitting, therefore, for me to create a unique beer altogether, the Smoked Baltic Porter. Our Smoked Baltic Porter is our most complex beer. The aroma is entirely unique, mostly due to our generous addition of dry hops in the conditioning tank. Beneath the aroma of hops is the flavor of toffee, chocolate, and a slight sharpness from the patent malt. For the discerning enthusiast, note the subtle smoky notes beneath it all... The beer is full-bodied and chewy, hoppy throughout, and finishes with a slight burnt nuttiness from the dark malts. Despite its robust complexity, the beer is very drinkable for its size and strength.

Retired already? It looks like it has returned to production, given that I had some at Barcade. Perhaps Sixpoint never truly retires a beer. Lightly sweet smoky coffee aroma with some floral notes. The flavor is much the same as the aroma (are you reading this, cuz?). It is a little thin - solid but not the best.

Barcade special brew J.C. a nice fruit, hop and chocolate concoction more on the pine side. red berry and citrus infused. mild malt presence. some moderate sugar sweetness. just a hint of vine. Very fresh and certainly demonstrative for the style.

Seems the SMP is back on Sixpoint’s roster. A murky brown ale woth a thin brown head. In aroma, a sweet nutty malt with roasted qualities, lightly pungent. In mouth, a rich and smooth nutty malt with herbal notes, chocolate, nice and rich. On tap at Barcade Brooklyn, Dec. 30 2011.

Thanks to Eugene for sharing and to Shane for giving the bottle to Eugene to share with me. Dark black beer with a thick light brown, lingering head. Very rich sweet creamy rich chocolate aroma, some licorice and a bit of cocoa. Soft roasty quality with a shot of salty smokiness throughout. Earthy chewy soft finish. Rich and chewy sweet, but not at all cloying. The soft roast and smoke serve as a counterpoint to the cocoaish maltiness. Full-bodied with a bit of peppery alcohol on the back.

12oz bottle from the super cooler brewer/owner, Shane. As far as I understand it’s a homebrewering like hand bottle. It pours a completely black body with a lightly tan colored head, which is pretty strong. The head never really goes away and leaves a strong lacing. Aroma is strong as well with maltiness that is slick and oily. Then comes some stinging alcohol with light meat smoke. It’s light smoke with thick malt and touches of alcohol, its cool. Taste is again strong with alcohol, prunes and smoke. It finishes with a toffee candy. The body is a bit light for all the strong flavors and the alcohol touches and it tickles the tongue. In general the alcohol is too much but the other characteristics make up for it.
