3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a deep black with a fairly thick brown head. Aroma leads with a huge kick of pine hops, then rounds out with chocolate and malt notes. Powerful flavor, with a lot of strong components vying with one another - assertive West coast hops, alcohol, chocolate and coffee. It doesn’t work together perfectly, but it’s interesting enough to be well worth the ride.
Tap pour at the source for ECBT. Commonshawn, rosskyle, samadouche present. Black in color with tan like head. Tulip pour. Nose has roasty malt with a little smoke. Taste has a nice bitterness with the roasted malt and smoke coming into play again. Not as bitter or hoppy as other variations of the style. Leans more towards a stout than a traditional black IPA. Reminiscent of chocolate in the finish. It’s better than anticipated. No clothes needed. MadRobin (2989) - Silver Spring, Maryland, USA - DEC 4, 2014

Coffee, licorice, and pine nose. Mahogany, medium creamy tan head. Cola at the beginning but pine and grapefruit at midpalate A surge of instant coffee in an enduring finish. Soil present. Medium body, creamy. What a lovely earthy black IPA. Probably heavier than is needed for the style, but the hops are certainly there in good numbers. Very nice. kramer (6991) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 8, 2014
Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a nice foamy brown head that had nice retention. The nose is bright citrusy hops with a heavy chocolate and roasty malt base. The flavor is really well balanced between the hops and the Porter flavors. Strong chocolate malt base that has a little roastiness on the finish. Medium bodied with a sturdy firm mouthfeel and fizzy soft carbonation. Really nice hoppy porter. Leighton (22773) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - NOV 18, 2013
Bottle shared at King William IV - London. Pours deep brown with a moderate, creamy tan cap. Nose holds a good dose of roasted malts with burnt pine and grapefruit. Medium sweet flavor, well and roasty, with grapefruit, dirt, rind. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Somewhat resinous to finish with cocoa roast, more grapefruit, toasted pine. Solid.

Bottle share at the Rainbow IPA mini event at the King William IV. Opaque black - brown beer. Good pale tan head. Light airy palate, semi dry. Fine carbonation. Just a light touch of the dark malt but with good dark chocolate. Light citrus and ripe orange. Crispy finish. Decent.
Deep dark brown coloured body with a single centimetre tall tan head with some violet tints at the bottom. Aroma of roasted malt, fresh hops, grapes, oak, flowers, hay, yeast and a bit more roasted malt - nice. Medium-bodied; Assertive fresh hop flavour with a good resin and piney kick, all with some roasted malt, but not too strong, flavours coming through. Aftertaste shows a little earthiness with some alcohol flavours, fresh hops, caramel, oak and dryness and a hint of grapes. Overall, a nice beer with a relatively good complexity and a strong sweet and bitter finish. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 06-July-2013 for US$5.84 sampled at home in Washington on 12-September-2013. Dark brown nearly black pour. Khaki medium head. Balanced aroma between malt roastiness and hop citrus. Flavor is very similar. Nice balance between the two in the flavor as well.
