I try very hard to enjoy Smithwicks, only because it’s made by Guinness. In the end, it just doesn’t live up to the majesty of a good Guinness Draught. June 4th, 2013.

Very light malty aroma, but not much really going on. Crisp and refreshing, ok for hot days.

Pours a nice deep red colour, with an average head. Not an overly flavourful beer, but consistent.

Draught, creamy very long lasting, off white head, clear light brown to deep red colour, malty caramel aroma, biscuit caramel flavour with a hint of spice, quite smooth. Not too complex but very easy to drink.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a hazy dark copper/orange/brown color with a one and a half finger white mushroom cap of a head. As the head died down, there was some nice clingy somewhat foamy lacing gracing the sides of the glass. The smell had a fairly rich dark nutty aroma with light gestures of caramel and toffee notes to blend and sweeten. The taste was sweet with a light nutty caramel/ toffee toastiness going on in there on the side. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat there but showed a decent smoothness to pervade throughout. Overall, for the style, this one is good for me, not bad at all. Pass the fish n ’ chips.

Draft at Moriartys in August 2014 (but have had a million times before!) The pre-Diageo recipe was less refined but much more interesting. As of today (and trying to look at blindly what for me is the standard Irish Red Ale) - Clear dark ruby pour that starts with a large foamy white head. Nutty and malty. Brazil nut shells. Plum pudding. Mild dark caramel toffee. Cloves. Toasted whole wheat bread. Gentle dark red fruits. Slightly burnt grapefruit rinds. Bing cherry. Red plums. Tinge of charcoal. Wee bit tart. Body reads too thin and watery. Memories of the earlier version read it as less fruit (no tart) and fuller nuttier toffee flavors. Juicier now, but less solid. Still a go to for me, but better halved with Guinness.
