j12601 (11573) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - JUN 28, 2017
On tap at the brewery. Pours a softly almost hazed amber with a thin tan head. Big and boozy on the nose, plum, prune, a heap of musk and fruit. Medium bodied, big and boozy, like a pile of dehydrated fruit, loads of malt, fruit, lots of faint cocoa, a hefty amount of fruit, plum. Big, softly boozy with a good amount of effervescent notes. Cocoa, malt, roast, chocolate. Big, boozy, sweet. Delicious, but full of maple and booze.

Tap at Beer mongers. A: Mahogany body with a light mocha head that dissipates into nothing. N: Toffee, vanilla, caramel, toast, bourbon, oak, earth, and biscuit. T: Sweet but not cloying. Very English. M:Heavy, sticky body, no alcohol, softer carbonation, O: Very good. This is another winner, and another beer which I’d like to investigate further.

500 ml bottle. The beer is a darkish mahogany brown color. Fairly clear. Small tan head, dissipates fairly quickly. The aroma has a deep toasty caramel flavor. Light nuttiness. Brown sugar, toffee, molasses. Light cocoa, a little cola. Very nice barrel flavors - vanilla, spice, light oak, some light fruitiness. Rich flavors in the taste. Booze is milder than expected. It’s smooth and sweet, though could have a touch more darker malt depth. Light raisins, a mild mineral note. A little more oak in the finish. Mouthfeel is nice enough and the beer coats the mouth well, but it’s not as big and chewy as the best barleywines out there. This is firmly very good territory, and I think a better batch could verge on great.

hopwine (670) - brooklynzzzzz, New York, USA - OCT 5, 2016
2016 Huge barrel influence, molasses, toffee, cocoa. Not as much heat as you might expect on such a huge beer, especially given how little time this spent in a bottle. Huge body, oily mouthfeel.
