Almost clear deep red beer, good pale tan head. Big bourbon nose. Palate is surprisingly light and has mild minerally crispness. Big bourbon - spicy. Toffee - cream malts underneath. Trace of vanilla oak. Fruity bourbon before a light dry finish. Warming afterglow. Pretty full on bourbon! Hides the abv reasonably well.

A: The pour is a dark amber color, bordering on mahogany with a finger’s worth of slightly off-white head. S: Wow, the nose on this beer is phenomenal. Tons of vanilla, bourbon, maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, and toffee provide a wonderful sweetness. Some miscellaneous dark fruit notes and chocolate fill in the background of the aroma. T: The flavor is similarly impressive. Lots of sweet, rich vanilla, bourbon, and oak accompanied by toffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup. The finish is all the prevents this from a perfect score as there is a bit of alcohol and heat, along with some hints of chocolate. M: The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, rich, and full bodied. A light but nearly perfect level of carbonation. D: I was told this beer was good, but I had to see for myself. This is one of, if not the, best barrel aged barleywines I’ve come across. I might go back again soon to have some more.

Bottle with CB for Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA, but memory says it’s from Marcus. Memory! Meh! Pours very dark copper with a beige head.Aroma of caramel and sweet toffee. Near full bodied at least. Flavor is bourbon/treacle/toffee/brown sugar. Which does not do justice to the flavor. It is very strongly flavored. Not dry of course, and only moderately bitter, but it is really flavorful and tasty.

Tap sample. Poured hazy reddish brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark fruit, toasted malt, alcohol and wood aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy fruit bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a complex standout beer.

j12601 (12700) - Poughkeepsie, New York, USA - JUN 28, 2017
On tap at the brewery. Pours a softly almost hazed amber with a thin tan head. Big and boozy on the nose, plum, prune, a heap of musk and fruit. Medium bodied, big and boozy, like a pile of dehydrated fruit, loads of malt, fruit, lots of faint cocoa, a hefty amount of fruit, plum. Big, softly boozy with a good amount of effervescent notes. Cocoa, malt, roast, chocolate. Big, boozy, sweet. Delicious, but full of maple and booze.

500 ml bottle shared with drsordr. Pours a clear copper color with a small to medium off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, smooth dessert like beer, hint of wood and a general spice character, some booze comes through, solid enough.
