Gold Medal Winner - 2012 Great American Beer Festival, Denver, CO - Coffee Beer
A coffee-beer, rather than a beer with coffee. A robust porter aged on fresh locally roasted, fair trade ground coffee. Enhanced flavors of chocolate, roasted malt, and of course coffee are present. "Like a chocolate covered espresso bean."

Got as a gift from RaulMondesi. 500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, cream, smoke, charcoal, dark fruit, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty dark roast coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of vanilla, cream, smoke, charcoal, dark fruit, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate roast/char and herbal/grassy hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, vanilla, smoke, char, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/bready/sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an excellent coffee porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, despite the highly carbonated/drying finish. Other than the carbonation, this was very impressive. Huge amounts of fruity/nutty coffee complexity, with a spot on American porter malt profile and hop balance. A very enjoyable offering.

Fles van Beer Republic. Koffie, koffiekoekjes, beetje drop. Redelijk bitter. Iets teveel koolzuur. Vrij droog in de nasmaak.

sample from bottle @ZZT 2017 at Benzai's, shared by TheJvd, pours black with a nice khaki head. aroma of an enormous amount of coffee, beans, roasted, chocolate. Taste has also a dominant coffee base, lots of carbo also, some hops, chocolate, roasted and toasted malts, pretty sweet, however a bit thin, slightly acidic, probably of the coffee, still nice, medium body.

Thanks to TheJvd! Bottle sampled as “Smog City Coffee Porter” @ ZZT 2017. Black. Nose is very heavy chocolate massive coffee roast, coffee totally dominates. Taste is huge coffee, massive, rather bitter almost herbal, bark, some cacao, interesting & nice but too much coffee & little elements for me, it is very coffee. Very thick bodied. Nice but could use a bit more balance for me but bigger coffee lovers might appreciate it more.

On tap at Venice Ale House on 15 October 2017. There is no doubt that this Porter has coffee in it as you can smell the coffee straight up and there is a coffee bean bitterness in the flavour as well. Black in colour with a tan coloured head. Bitter aftertaste in the mouth but not unpleasant.
