4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from 2011. Muddy looking burnt sienna pour with a thin wisp of white head. Aroma is pretty much the quintessential smell you look for in a barley wine. Rich toffee and dark plum, candied figs, chocolate, caramel, oak, and a little dry red wine. Taste is a little bit of a let down compared to the aroma. It is sweet, though much drier than expected. Some raisin, prune, cocoa, and toffee. Finishes oddly tannic for something not oak aged and containing no fruit. Palate is hearty, chewy, and lightly carbonated. Overall a very high quality English barley wine. I would love to get the chance to try it fresh. I like a little heat in barley wines, and this is close to two years aged and smooth as can be. Virtually no alcohol burn or flavor. Yet another great big beer from Smuttynose.
2013 bottle. This is exactly what a archetypal barleywine should be -- it’s sweet without being cloying, boozy without being hot, and there’s a good amount of flavor complexity (to the point that I almost thought it was barrel aged, because there’s a great vanilla/oak flavor at the end). Fantastic. SirLimpsalot (4220) - SWEDEN - DEC 8, 2016
@ Eddan 16-12-3: stora malttoner med en humlig underton. Söt men inte för illa. Fin kola med bra balans. Bulk_Carrier (6065) - Vermont, USA - DEC 4, 2016
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a rugged burnt dark orange/muddy brown color. A finger’s worth of white foamy head sat atop of the beer for a good minute. Gentle messy lace.
The aroma brings forth sweet and bitter grassy and tobacco leafy hops. Bold and up front, oddly enough, I thought those would have died off given the bottle date. Semi-sweet caramel and toffee malts play with the balance. Citrus hops seem to underscore the aroma.
The flavor balances nicely between the hops and the malts. Tobacco leafiness still holds quite strong. Grassy to tobacco leafy to smooth caramel malty aftertaste rubbing against the finish nicely.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine, fairly mild (but it’s an old bottle, so I’m okay with that).
Overall, this one aged phenomenally. Only the citrusy hops have died off. Wouldn’t mind trying to get this again to try fresh. gyllenbock (9153) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - DEC 4, 2016
Bottle from Systembolaget. (bought in 2014) Clear reddish/amber with a large tan head. Sweet with malt, toffee, some hops, grapefruit and apricot. Similar taste. The body was full and the finish was long with warming alcohol.

Hazy orange color. Sweet aroma with dark sugar, dark fruits and earthy hops. Taste starts hoppy with earthy notes, walnuts, figs, really nice. Easy drinking, well hidden alcohol, bitter aftertaste. olsvammel (7220) - Örebro, SWEDEN - AUG 27, 2016

Sample at tasting. Smooth malts, light spicy alcohol, some honey. Strong bitterness with a pretty harsh alcoholic vodka-esque note. Good, but... ALIBALI (2070) - Kiel, GERMANY - AUG 10, 2016

Amber color. Bit sweet aromas of caramel and bread, ripe fruits. Sweet malt taste, fruit and caramel, heavily influenced by the hops - grass and pine. Bitter-sweet finish. Goes well with cheese.
