Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA! There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious. On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a fairly plain brown color with a huge light-tan head which leaves some pretty significant lacing. Aroma is malty with some pine hops. It’s pretty subdued, but nice nonetheless. Taste is a nice caramel and toffee malt base surrounded by some earthy pine hops. A very interesting combination, but I like it.

0.33l bottle @ Hotel Room. This is a deeper colored brown one with a tall near fluffy light beige head. Smells almost more like an barley wine IMO. A really present malty sticky sweetness thats being backed up by a mild roastiness and chocolate. Really good smelling undoubtedly. It has a nice oily texture in the mouth and its about average on the carbonation. Chocolaty and cocoa-ish in the taste. Lots of nice bitter hops going on. Traces of licorice also. Really tasty and great with mac and cheese. 14.06.2015

Bottle. Brown with some reddish tones with light brown head with god lacing. Tastes to some smoked malts but still being a fruity beer. Very recommendable.

On tap at Angel’s Trumpet Ale House, pours a hazy chestnut brown with a small beige head. Aroma broker out toasted nuts, bready malt and a hint of caramel. Flavour is robust, full of caramel, bready malt, toasted nuts and a dry malty finish. Well-balanced. Malt-heavy for the most part with just enough bitterness to dry this out. Very good.

Burgundy color. Roasted caramel malt, bread and brown sugar aromas. Caramel flavors, bread, sugar and some bitter hops during the finish.

(Bottle) Brown colour with frothy, beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, hoppy nose with dark fruit, coffee, dark rye bread, chocolate, treacle, citrus peel, some liquorice and hints of resin. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of dark fruit, crisp-bread, black coffee, liquorice, chocolate, caramel, grapefruit and a generous resiny/citric bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness, but overall fairly dry. Complex and tasty with a solid hop bitterness. Still in good balance. Very nice.

Deliciosa combinación de las notas maltosas y a frutos secos de las brown ale con un lupulado potente, protagonizado por el simcoe en la nariz. Nueces, tofe y especias con un toque bien amargo, resinoso y presencia de alcohol

Bottled. The body is brown, the head small and light brown. The aroma has nuts, a fair amount of smoke. The taste is strong! Plenty of alcohol.
