Appearance: Its body has a bright cherry red color with good clarity. The just off white head is small and soapy. The lager bubbles quickly settle out leaving just a thin layer of foam that just barely covers the beer. Lacing is minimal and very slick.
Smell: The aroma is kind of light and simple. All I really get are notes of tart fruit.
Taste/Palate: Its light to medium body has a sweet/tart syrupy cherry thing going on with light amber maltiness backing it up. A little hop bitterness comes in just at the end to finish things off with a blend of sticky sweet/tart fruit and musty/leafy bitterness. The texture is slick and sticky with not enough carbonation to really cleanse the palate.
Notes: The fruit flavor alright but a bit syrupy and I could see this becoming cloying after more than one. There was carbonation present but not enough for me. I think maybe if it had been bottle conditioned and had more champagne like carbonation it would lift up this beers palate and make it interesting. But that’s just my two cents.

Draft at the Three Penny Taproom - Pours a darkish brown/amber in color with a medium off-white head. Aroma is distinctly of sour cherries. Flavor is quite sour with a nice flavor of cherries. Finish is clean and tart. Not for everyone, but it was drinkable. hershiser2 (3597) - Charlottesville, Virginia, USA - AUG 26, 2010
Bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy red-brown with an inch of off-white head. Tastes of bitter cherry with a hint of alcohol. Tastes of a strong bitter cherry. DaSilky1 (2606) - San Diego, California, USA - AUG 20, 2010
Pours with nice frothy head atop a nicely hazed autumn orange. Nose was a bit spicy with sour cherry juice notes behind..like a decomposing cherry oktoberfest, kind of...I like the cherry pits, there’s nothing wrong with the nose, so not of the low scores so far...clean, soft and creamy malt body with nice cherry tartness draped over it...cherry pit pie fo sho. This beer doesn’t deserve the low scores everyone gives it...me love the above description long time Guyute_Pig (103) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - AUG 11, 2010
So glad to see the other reviews on this, blah. Cherry flavored metal. Could not drink this beer and it made me wary of Smutty for a while. Fortunately, I have tried there other brews now. Can’t believe they still bottle this...

Bottle--ugh, didn’t like this at all. Pours an almost copper color with a decent head. Slight sour cherry aroma. Taste was very, very sour and full of tartness. A drain pour. Produce Place. jmm635 (1015) - Havertown, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 27, 2010
Pours clear and red-orange with a faint pink head. Kind of a lager malt aroma with obvious cherries. Sweet, fruity flavor with a tart, sour cherry middle. Finish is juicy. Honestly, I was expecting worse. jkwood04 (5463) - Connecticut, USA - JUN 11, 2010
12oz bottle in a shaker. Was tricked by a cheap price to put this in my mixed 6 pack. Flavored like cherry, cinnamon. Very tart and bitter and dry and not good. tgncc (3140) - Bellmore, New York, USA - JUN 4, 2010
Aroma is slightly sour, wheat, cherries. The appearance is deep red, off-white head. The flavor is cherries, cereal grains., he finish is like cherry njuice, piney hops. Drinkable. dpjuart (1112) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 29, 2010
Pours red with amber hues, pig off white head, lacing and foamy. Fruity notes with bread and malt in the nose. Tart cherries and some malt. Very little bitter to go along with it. I like me some Smuttynose, but just not my style.
