17.02.07 12oz bottle. Odd choice, this latest in the Smuttynose lineup. And I can imagine the looks on the faces of many beer lovers as they are baffled by the familiar Smuttynose logo juxtaposed with the silly characters and their sushi on the label. The pour is a dark copper-amber with pinkish beige head. Aroma is woody like cedar, pungent, with overtones of wet leaf litter and a background of a cinnamon-spice. Dry and astringent stuff with plenty of earthy hops throughout, but no cherry. This really seemed more than anything just like a relatively uninteresting generic American brewpub English style pale ale. dogfishho (669) - Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA - FEB 15, 2007
UPDATED: FEB 21, 2007 The aroma is thin and not surprisingly straightforward with a mild cherry smell with some sourness to it. The appearance is a somewhat cloudy, yet bright amber color with a thin creamy head. The flavor is more than just mildly tart with a fruity, cherry sweetness with no hop character to speak of. The finish, due to the acidity, is somewhat clean and the mouthfeel is somewhat full which contrasts the flavor which is somewhat thin. I’m not sure what to make of this beer. It’s not bad, not great, and probably a great way to ease someone into drinking lambics. MullMan (1099) - Brooklyn, New York, USA - FEB 14, 2007
body is light copper and clear, head is thinnish light tan foamy, goes quickly. aroma is dry fruity grasses, like sour cherries and their branches. flavor is tart and dry malt, tangy sour cherry and grassy too. a bit watery, and yes, an astringent finish. freekyp (2257) - Thomasville, North Carolina, USA - FEB 14, 2007
I did not find that the cherries were very apparent in the aroma. Rather, I thought the brew has a slightly acrid vinegar nose, not unlike a Rodenbach or other sour brown. Not being a big fan of sour browns, I did not take to the aroma. It does have a nice ruby hue and holds its small tan head well. Highly effervescent with small bubbles, Hanami ale is pretty thin bodied, with a very subdued malt character for its color. There is a little bit of fruity sweetness, but not the amount expected from the cherry content. The finish is slightly sour but with a bitter hop note that seems almost out of place. Not recommended. sliffy (2040) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - FEB 14, 2007
EBF 2007: Clear red in color with an off white head. Aroma of cherries and yeast. Flavor, cherries, a tartness to it, pale malts, and some spice. Interesting, but really nothing special.

Pours light amber with a minimal off-white head. Light overall, but mostly citric acidity and lemon zest in the aroma, with a light hint of cherry. Flavor is citric, slightly fruity, and a bit sour. Palate is light/medium, acidic, astringent, and finally some light bitter-sweet cherry. This is quite drinkable despite the astringent finish, but just not nearly up to par with the other smutty beers I’ve had. Either way, the triple haiku description is creative. UPDATED: MAR 5, 2007 [bottle] Pours a slightly pink amber color, with a minimal white head. Slightly musty, acidic aroma, with cherries and lemony citrus present. Flavors are acidic and dry- but still retaining some complexity. Slightly astringent finish. Pretty good, overall... an interesting, yet drinkable brew. Pours a rusty reddish/brown with slight pinkish undertones. A Fluffy head coats the top of the glass. The nose has faint hint of tart strawberries and cranberries. The flavor is very clean. Tartness from the cherry juice is present on the palate and drys out the finish. The cherry flavors are more of a tart raw cranberry. Very subtle and mellow. Perfect for a spring days picnic. Grab the kids and get hammered on Hanami! Perfect for a Super Terrific Happy Hour! hiphops (324) - caldwell, New Jersey, USA - FEB 7, 2007
smells like a maibock. with a nit of cherry. it tastes like a maibock cut with a mixutre of water and cherry juice. there is a nother taste present in the beer aside from the beer the hops and barley that is due to the cherry juice but it doesnt exactly taste liek cherry. alright beer but with as with the winter lager its just kinda not wroking. UPDATED: FEB 15, 2007 12oz bottle. Pours clear orange-copper with a large head. Fair lacing. Aroma is yeasty, with lemon zest, honey and cherries. The whole effect is somewhat floral. Tastes kind of like your average wheat/fruit ale, with slightly subdued cherries and a sour lemon overtone. Finishes sweet and sour.
