Smuttynose Homunculus has a thin, off-white head, a brilliant, very bubbly, gold-orange appearance, and a bit of splotchy lacing left behind. The aroma is of full, sweet, yeasty, spicy, bready malt, and the flavor is of all that, with distinct pepper and floral hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Smuttynose Homunculus finishes semi-dry, mellow, hefty, rich, and delicious. Overall, this is outstanding! RJT ALIBALI (2396) - Kiel, GERMANY - FEB 20, 2016
0,3l/4,50. Bomber from Capone’s. Pours turbid dark straw toward orange w 1-f white head and copious lace. Nose is rock sugary yeast, hopcitrus, florals. Tastes rich, floral, spicy, with Belgian yeasty flavors, some dry chardonnay notes, heavy fruit, and backup hops. Complex and flavorful, this one is very good. mcnealc31 (255) - Elida, Ohio, USA - MAY 5, 2012
Hazy gold with a fluffy white head, the fruit from the Belgian yeast is very noticeable in the aroma. At first, fruit dominates the flavor as well, with orange, apricot, and banana. Even a bit of bubble gum. Hops flavors come through after the fruit with a peppery jolt, leading to a dry and somewhat bitter finish. The aftertaste is similar to butterscotch candy. Some heat comes from the 9.9% ABV, but not overpowering.
Very tasty. If they keep this is a yearly, seasonal release beer, I can see it get very popular bropgh (31) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 23, 2014
I am not a huge fan of high ABV beers. This is acceptable. Not too strong, but still strong. I bought a bottle of this mainly for the name and didn’t think to read too much into it. Yes, my own fault, I was in a hurry before work. I could have one of these every once and a while and while it is still quite tasty, I enjoy having a few beers, and by the feel of this so far, this would be a beer I could have one over a good deal of time. Delicious as a beer, but for my drinking preferences, I would like it a little weaker. Still a damn good brew. Sorry if this was a bad review. It was my first full out review and now that I read this, it was more about my preference to drink than the beer itself. I will have to re-do this again.

Cloudy orange, frothy white head. Aroma of peaches, orange zest, coriander, and tart banana. Peppery on the tongue initially, yielding to spicy peach and orange....the sweetness was perfectly balanced with hop appearances. KornDogg (570) - Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 10, 2011
On Tap, The Fridge, Lancaster PA. Aroma of candied cloves and yeast. Golden body with thin lasting head, nice lacing. Flavor begins citrusy followed by sweet fruity yeast and hops, bitter finish - aftertaste. Well balanced. A tasty treat. wlajwl (7008) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - DEC 11, 2011
Citrus, hops and grains/bread in aroma. The flavor is citrus first then a mix of bready malts and hops that leads into a lingering bitter and alcoholic. Relatively simple BSA, effective. nuplastikk (6414) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - NOV 17, 2012
22oz bottle. Unfiltered orange-tan, foamy white head. Really nails the dry Belgianish hop character, and amps it up US style. Really well balanced and drinkable for the ABV. Golden malt, straw, pleasant almost white wine yeast esters. Dry and clean, almost a spruce touch. Massive golden malt and alcohol aftertaste, champagne touches. A rugged, hardcore hoppy Belgian Tripel with lots of finesse, The real deal. chanokokoro (138) - Illinois, USA - NOV 26, 2012
Poured from a 2012 vintage 22 oz. bottle into a Smuttynose Big Beer Series branded snifter.
Pours a hazy gold with deep amber accents. Two and a half finger fluffy bright white head Belgian yeast, spices, some mild funk, and herbal and grassy hops on the nose. Fruit notes, grassy, herbal hops, phenol alcohol, bready yeasty esters, white pepper and spice. Finishes fairly dry with yeasty, mild alcohol and spice. Fairly creamy mouthfeel with lively carbonation, light bodied. A very well done beer that will please anyone who appreciates Belgian-style beers.
