COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

UPDATED: AUG 14, 2009 2009-08-02. Golden amber body with a small white head. Flavour has a pleasant bitterness, light resin and strong grassy notes, pale malt is lightly grainy. (6+) Mild aroma, hops and a touch of fruitiness. (6+) Average palate. Decent, quaffable. 7/3/7/3/14 - 3.4 On tap at Coles, Buffalo

March 2004. Golden body, with a moderate white head. Grassy green hop pellet like aroma with a bit of citrus poking through in both the aroma and the flavour. Not as well balanced as it could be but a nice beer. 7/3/6/3/15 - 3.4

Bronze-copper w/ decnet off-white head. Fresh aroma of pine & grapefruit. Medium feel w/ some stickiness. Lovely fresh hops flavour of pine & grapefruit w/ a decent underlying maltiness. Finish is fairly bitter w/ some earthy, minty notes.

This one seems to give me indigestion?

Bronze color. Biscuity in smell, a little bit hoppy in flavor. Nothing great, not even as good as Sierra Nevada. Ok though.

Deep golden orange color with an excellent white head that produces plenty of lacing. Piney hop aroma with notes of grapefruit and orange peel. Assertive hoppy flavor, with some balancing malt in the middle. Finishes up dry and bitter. Solid IPA with one of the coolest labels I have seen in along time.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2004 I bought a case of this when it came out, and I love it more and more. A great everyday IPA. The lacing and residual froth is outstanding. Perfect hop nectar - well balanced and delicious. Here it is…the Smutty 12oz IPA. And it's tasty! Pours a slightly golden copper color with a huge fluffy head. Lots of lacing. Mildly sour aroma greets the hops at the nose. Taste bubbles with English hops with a nice balance of maltiness. Hops linger in the aftertaste. Not mind blowing, but very good. Another winner from Smuttynose. Drink beer…love beer.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2011 Pours a slightly cloudy copper with a decent 1.5cm white head that has suprising staying power and nice lacing. Very aromatic IPA...hops in the nose, with bitter hints of grapefruit. Hops in the middle follwed by some strong malts. Very nice mouthfeel. Ill give this one some props.---re-rate 8/15/05. The aroma is very pleasant and much better than the 6 that I had given it originally. This beer is just great. Beautiful balance of grapefruit hoppiness with nice buttery caramel sweetness in the middle with a bit more hops to finish. A goddamn solid IPA. Increased aroma from 6 to 8. Decreased appearance from 5 to 4. Increased Flavor from 7 to 8. Increased overall from 15 to 17.----Yet another RE-RATE-------& ounce sample tap at The Ale and Witch in St. Pete, FL. Listed as Finest Kind IPA. The aroma is toasted and chewy with some crystal maltiness. Herbal, earthy, British IPA hop character is also present with light sweetness. Moderately hazy dirty golden body with a medium, off-yellow head. Herbal, bitter hop start, followed by chewy tannins. Some dank hemp notes follow. Fairly oily body. Finishes with herbal and floral hop bitterness. Pretty standard East-coast IPA.

Pours a copper color, clear but a tiny bit of haze, creamy white head, some lace. Aroma of citrusy and a little piney hops, some underlying malt. Flavor is malty up front, lots of hops in the rear. The malt is a little too grainy, though. Finish is long and bitter and you'll have burps that taste like hops. Medium body, nice and smooth. Pretty nice little IPA.
