COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Golden beer with ample head. Light on the hops unfortunately, but decent flavor otherwise. As long as you like slightly hoppy pale ales not a bad choice.

Draft 0.5l at Samo Pivo Belgrade, Serbia. 08.05.2017. Pour it hazy yellow color with small white head. Aroma sourish and malty. Taste citrusy, crisp, orange, not so fresh again, light body, finish really thin feel, slick feel, average carbonation, bitter and odd.

Bottle enjoyed during at tilted kilt in Boston. Backlog rating from bottle collection and historic scoring.

12oz bottle. Pours gold with a small off-white head. Aroma is grass, citrus, pine, and a little malty sweetness. Taste is pine resin, orange/citrus, light caramel, a hint of grass, and a tiny bit of soap. Bitter finish. Light body. Average carbonation. Crisp. Highly drinkable. Nothing all that noteworthy about this one, but it is a very solidly executed IPA.

Simply put, this is the best IPA you're likely to find in the Northeast. When you want to have a crisp, hoppy beer after a long day, you be hard pressed to find anything better.

3.8
tfontana (1184) - Fremont, New Hampshire, USA - OCT 24, 2017
UPDATED: DEC 19, 2017 Taster pours at NH Brewfest and the source. Appearance is lightly hazy yellow-brown, nice sparkle, finger-width foamy white head with good retention and fair lacing. Aroma is hoppy melon, tropical fruit, grass, orange-citrus, mild cracker/biscuit. Taste is pine/grapefruit, citrus, bitter resin--not as fruity as the aroma. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin frothy/foamy texture, average-to-lively carbonation and dry finish as taste, more bitter than sweet. Overall, this was a little milder than I expected but with decent complexity.

3.3
Bill Becker (2007) - Casper, Wyoming, USA - OCT 17, 2017
From Aug 2006 Poured from 12oz bottle a cloudy reddish gold with a fairly large head of foam that shrunk quickly leaving a solid layer for most of the session and then.. diminished some more until just a very fine layer remained. The smell is quite hoppy with notes of citrus like grapefruit and lemon and there's a bit of malty sweetness in the nose as well. The taste is actually a bit sweeter than I expected. The hops are definitely in control with grapefruit and lemon and a bit of grass but the malt presence kind of eases the bitter tones until the finish when it becomes quite bitter and very refreshing. Good stuff! Bottom line: A very good example of an American IPA. Thanks go out to jwc215 for including this one in our trade!

Pours a pale golden with strong white head. A floral hop aroma. Light bodied with a big flora and melon hop character. Notes: bottle at Vino Volo, Logan Airport Sep '17

3.8
brownaler (742) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - AUG 25, 2017
Musty oat malts with a syrupy sweet hop profile. Like the shoals pale ale, but slightly stronger.

3.3
pootzboy (1824) - Kitchener, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 16, 2017
Can = pours a lightly hazed gold with a 1 finger white cap that reduces but lasts - aroma is grapefruit-floral-piney with a decent sweet malt underpinning flavor follows aroma - clean finish, not overly hoppy but a session IP decent but not distinct.
