Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBUs, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way thats not easy to find. We think theyll be quite pleased.

Bottle. Pours a hazy straw color with a medium-thick head. Nice clean aroma of citrusy hops. The flavor is a bit less assertively hoppy, with some cereal notes and a bit of caramel character from the malts. Citrus and pine hops. A lot of sweetness on the finish, and a hint of red bean, oddly. A pretty nice IPA.

A nicely balanced east coast IPA with a citrus zest nose and spicy hop bite. The light malt backbone stands up to the unusual hop bill, and this one is well thought out. An easy quaff that belies its stout 6.9%. I like the fact that this one eshews the resinous mj component of west coast IPAs while still showcasing its altogether different take on hops. Excellent.

Pours light gold with a decent white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma is pine and tropical fruit. The taste is quite bitter with a hint of sweetness. There are notes of tropical fruit, pine, grass, grain and resin. Its a pretty decent IPA with some distinct flavours and plenty of IBUs.

Can. Pours a hazy rusty golden color with a wispy large to white beige head. Nose is bittersweet citrus with appreciable pine and resin. Taste is bitter with softer citrus and harder pine and resin. Finishes on the same hard bitter notes with a long piney and resinous finish. Mild lacing . Quaff Score 6 / 10

"Finestkind" bottle from the Beer Store. Peachy honey pour, fairly clear and lustrous; faintly sandy head. Aroma is big toffee malt up front, with peach, plum, slightly overripe tropical fruit following. Taste is where this beer shines - toffee sweetness up front, but not cloying. Fresh, flowery and piney hops kick in fairly early on and stick around for most of the drink. Sticky palate works for the flavour profile. While I prefer my IPAs a little less malt-heavy, this is a solid, easy-drinking brew.

Can from LCBO. Interesting to scroll through a few pages of the reviews & see the split in opinions. Even more interesting to read the reviews from 10 years ago. Maybe this was a hop bomb back in the day but now its more of a lawn mower ipa. Bit of a clunky old school ipa in my opinion: more emphasis on ham-fisted pine bitterness than hop expressiveness. Youll recognize this interpretation of the style the minute you taste it of youre an ipa aficionado. By no means is this bad. I like it. It just feels dated (which is ok).

35 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, fruit, tangerine, citrus. Appearance: light amber-golden yellow color with under average head thickness. Slightly off-white head with good retention and medium Brussels lacing. Quite hazy beer. Taste: low sweetness, medium-to-high bitterness, low sourness. Good and intense flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit, fruits, citrus, maybe orange peel. Palate: light body, watery texture, average carbonation, very long, dry and bitter finish of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit and fruits. Overall: very good appearance, not very intense but good aromas. Quite intense and very lingering flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit and fruits. Very drinkable and refreshing despite of its high bitterness. Good IPA.
